I mean, sometimes it is obvious (wants to go out, is hungry, wants to come in) but other times, I have no clue.

For instance, my cat will be laying there, will hear me come down the stairs, lift his head, look at me and meow. Every time he sees me, he meows. My mom says he never "tries to speak" (in her words) to anyone else and finds it funny he does it just with me. The way he meows, she thinks he is trying to speak to me. He is a pretty chill dude. I dunno, what do you think they are saying?

He's probably saying Hi! My guys have a way of talking to me too. Each one has a different greeting and are brothers.

My little (and mildly psychotic guy) meows when he wants go out, when he wants to go in (often only seconds apart) when he wants more food, when he sees something (invisible to my mere human eye) floating in his water dish, when he wants me pet him instead of reading, when he doesn't want me to pet him (often only seconds apart haha), when he wants my spot on the couch, when he wants some lap that is occupied by my laptop, when he wants to be looked at, when he doesn't want to be looked at, meows so that no one forgets that he's there, when he's irritated and just roams through the house loudly to let us all know, sometimes he just meows looking at me like he's asking a question that I should know the answer to....

he's a very vocal cat, and meows for a million reasons and more. Oh, but I love the little guy to pieces for it :)

I never did, but our one cat, who has creepily human expressions and seems to be genius; has recently started meowing (after becoming a catnip junkie =P) and she has an uncanny amount of distinct meows.

I hear all these different meows and I start trying to figure out if certain meows mean certain things.

I swear my cat tries to talk to me in the kitchen in the middle of the night. I'll be out there getting food and she'll come in all happy, and I'll be petting her for like a good 10 minutes while she's purring, pacing, etc...and then all of a sudden she gets pissed. Its like, she gets fed up with the petting or something, and tries to talk to me by meowing repeatedly. She'll meow in different volumes, different "tones", the whole nine yards. And during this she'll bat at me with her paw occasionally, like she's angry that I don't know what she's saying. Its fucking frustrating sometimes.

My buddy Amos has a lot of stuff to talk about in between purring like a well tuned race car. I never have figured out just exactly what he wants but a good scratch behind the ears seems to be a good response on my part. He's just a big old mellow-yellow pussycat happy to hang out and share some time with me. I appreciate him for that.

My cat's a whore...and every time you aren't giving him lovin, he gets pissed. He's pissed at me this morning and meowed to let me know...other than that, his are rather random and sporadic..

Although, he's started meowing after shitting recently...I find it funny because he celebrates shits, like he'll take a shit and then run around like a maniac for a good hour

I read somewhere that cats and guinea pigs both have a special meow/squeek that they don't do in the wild but develops in domestication to communicate with humans.

    - ding.ding.ding, there's your answer. This cat sees its self as your buddy...if you're midnight snacking, she's damn well expecting to snack with ya.

"petting her for like a good 10 minutes while she's purring, pacing, etc...and then all of a sudden she gets pissed. Its like, she gets fed up with the petting or something, and tries to talk to me by meowing repeatedly. ".........(cat language)Thanx for the lovin' now I've grown impatient and it's time for you to share the snacks, f'er !

Cats meow for the same reason dogs bark - to communicate. The precise meaning of that communication depends on the situation but it's usually one or two of:

    Hi.
    Let me in/out/.
    Feed me.
    Pet me.
    Adore me.
    Let's kill the dog.

I read where cats never meow at each other--only humans.

i've heard cats meow at me, at each other, heard them meowing to absolutely no one, alone in the basement [that guy might be going senile though]

they tell us when they want food, play, petting, or a piece of stuck shit pulled off their ass - keith will tell us when there's cats on the porch he wants to meet

the bit about them only meowing to people when tamed i kinda believe, and use it to discern between ferals and strays at my feeding station [and try to catch the strays]

while this may or may not be true, no cat would ever admit it
