Weird. I guess a lot of folks think disbelief in God automatically means an absence of morals. Or something.

By the way, that link doesn't seem to lead to the story you headlined.

As an atheist that feels extremely disrespected and repressed by mainstream America, I still really have to disagree.

No one thinks we're going to blow up buildings or molest their children. The Muslims, Arabs, and gays have it way way worse.

    Huh.

Because they are such weak people that they must have a book tell them it's wrong to rape babies and blow people up, they assume that the fact that I put no stock in this book means that I do those things.

    Interesting.

oh, we do far worse things than that, we don't believe their fairy tales

it sort of invalidates their reason for living, no?

 nah dude. the people that would oppose these minority groups are the ones that like to think they stick to the constitution the most, and "freedom of religion" is something you can easily debate over with them.
it all comes down to a de facto way of discrimination, but gays, muslims, and immigrants are much more further from political positions.

i highly doubt any of those minority groups you mentioned will make it into office before an atheist (besides black obviously).

Freedom of speech and freedom of religion:

The freedom for me to speak over you and the freedom for my religion to push it's ideology down your throat, using god's semen as lube.

You can just move to the Czech Republic. That country is 45% atheist whereas most countries around the world have a single digit atheist percentage, including the United States.

That's probably heavily related to soviet totalitarianism.

The fact that someone has no religion means nothing, if you took it from them by force.

When running for the presidency, if you don't pick one of the major religions, you will simply not get voted for...used to be if you were Catholic you would not get votes...Kennedy broke that shit! Then they killed him, so...

We may have already had some atheist presidents, maybe even more than 200 years ago. If you are smart enough to become President, you are smart enough to know that you can't admit to being an atheist if you want to get elected.

You can't force someone to change what they think. You can motivate them to stay away from church and answer a survey a certain way, until the local totalitarian government is no more.

Well yes, but the church was perminantly damaged in the soviet states. Which is a shame, eastern orthodoxy isn't the same rabbid bullshit as the roman catholic church, they're litarally idol worshipping heathens :p

When I lived there, there was a lot of hatred for everything Russia-related. A lot of old churches are still there and exist in several of the old towns. Sadly, the soviets killed a lot of east european culture. I dunno if you can fully attribute their widespread atheism to they 50 year tyranny they endured. But maybe.

Well religion rebounded hard, which is evidenced by the fact that there is ANY religion (officially), as opposed to hidden away in basements and the backs of peoples minds, as during soviet rule. But still, it obviously took a hit.

But forced atheism is no more real than any other forced conversion. Belief can only be coaxed, never forced.

To be honest, I disagree with this. People aren't really scared of atheists. They don't really even feel threatened. Its more frustration. They just don't understand how atheists can't be believe in god. Above all else, they just think atheists are stupid.

When it comes to race and gender, people often feel that another party is inferior. Or in the case of gays/lesbians, they think there is a mental illness.

I believe that atheists are strongly hated in this country. And around the world. But not as much as other groups.
