Ok all, I can use some input. Friend A has just given me and friend B $50 each to put together the best collection of vinyl we can find, which will comprise a wedding gift for friend A's friend. Awesome f^cking idea, right? Well the best part is, me and friend B are in competition; before we give them up, we're going to present them to our friends and maybe give them some music history lessons for each album, and they'll vote on who did a better job.

    Any ideas on albums?

I think "Layla and assorted love songs" should be in there
As well as The Band and maybe JJ Cale.

What I'm looking for is under-rated, historically significant or influential albums that also ROCK and are great fun to listen to. Not that they need to be overly-obscure, I mean I'd even include Abbey Road, Dark Side or Tommy or something, if I thought it was essential. But surprise underdogs are appreciated!

    cheers

Wow. No responses. I mean, this kind of question should have too many responses. There is some serious laziness going on in this here music forum.

well for rock + fun you could go for Back In Black by AC/DC

Screamadelica by Primal Scream is an upbeat dance rock classic

Let It Bleed and Exile On Main Street are probably the two best Stones albums

Disraeli Gears by Cream is another classic album, as is Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys

The Who Live At Leeds is seen as one of the best live rock albums of all time

if your friend has hippie tendencies you could consider the Woodstock triple live album of course

for blues you could throw in some Stevie Ray Vaughan, e.g. Texas Flood, Couldn't Stand The Weather (breathtaking Voodoo Chile cover), or In Step

a final thought is Lynyrd Skynrd's first album, including the epic Freebird

Some of the ones I still have after all these years:

    DIO -Holy Diver
    The Eagles -Hotel California
Creedence Clearwater Revival -more Creedence gold
    Golden Earring -cut
Def Leppard -too late for love
    the FIXX -Reach the Beach
Blue Oyster Cult -fire of unknown origin
    ELO -discovery

Edit: Just found this next to my chair. I put it there earlier because I wanted to look on youtube to check out the songs -it's been so long since i've heard them, and I don't have a record player anymore.
    The Kinks -Misfits (1978). Here's one I like from side 2, it's song #4:
