    Hi all,

My dreads are just over a year old, I've been root rubbing quite regularly for the last couple of months and it seems my thicker dreads are responding ok to it. I find it gives them a bit more volume at the roots, even if it's not actually doing anything for the knots - it's hard to tell!

However, I have fine hair and a few very thin dreads on the crown of my head- I've noticed some of the smallest dreads have seriously started to thin out at the root and feel very fragile. I'm beginning to congo 2 together to give them a thicker root and hope for no more damage. No more root rubbing for me!

Just thought this info might be of interest/use to some.

    Peace :)

We already know the negative effects of root rubbing but thanks for sharing all the same.

I'm aware it is mentioned in the FAQs, I just thought I'd confirm it with some personal experience. No need to be so patronising!

Hi Ishiko, I Have Never Root Rubbed, But Having Fine Hair Like You I Can't Imagine It

    Being Anything Else But Disasterous...:(.

My Hair Is Not Only Fine But Is Thinning Out On Top, :bigcry:And I Have

Lots Of These Fragile Little Dreads You Speak Of.

I Am At The 19 Month Mark And Right From Day One I Have Not Even Massaged

My Scalp When Washing, But Just Patted It So As Not To Disturb The

The Very Early Stages Of The Locking Process.

So Far I Have Lost Two Of The Babies On Top, They Only Consisted Of About 10 Hairs

    And Couldn't Possibly Survive..:(.

My Advice Is STOP Rubbing NOW, And Treat Your Hairz Like They Are Made Of

    Delicate Priceless Crystal...[IMG].

    Cheers Glen.

Hey G, it's a heavy topic, I have known a lot of peeps over the years that have started to thin ... and of course everyone fears it, even those that don't thin.

Alot of mop-heads, espeacially Rasta, that I have known over the years and met up with again since being back in SA have thinned out on top. But they work, well, with it and not against it (don't know if that made sense?) ... little bit of the old Jack Sparrow look ... Winston Rodney from Buring Spear's look is always a win too.

Thing is if you are dread, then you aren't doing a good job of conforming, which means the rules don't apply to you ... all of them ... even the rules of what to do when thinning, ie. to cut and keep short.

I know a 'standard white-hairtype, 5-year + dread-head that thinned out on top years ago ... but he has serious pulses (think people also say congo) down to his butt. He wears some form of I-Man-head-gear every day ... fat-cap, tam, super-wide bandana, whatever ... but he has been working with it for years. He has been a renowned dj round SA / Zimbabwe / Mozambique / Namibia for shit around 20 years now, being playing drums for longer, and currently owns a yacht and skippers / chartes it out for holiday-,akers.

Man, I have a point, hopefully it's in there somewhere :D

He wasn't always nice, he could rip a new one if necessary...just in a gentle, nurturing way, haha.

I was really disappointed to come back here and realize he's not around anymore.
