CBO: Taxing mileage a 'practical option' for revenue enhancement

    More: http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-acti...les-driven-a-real-option-for-raising-revenues

    Nice.

And who pays for the "device" and how much will it cost me to have it installed in my car?

Will I get my registration suspended if I don't comply? Or maybe worse?

    When will this madness end?

When I lived in Oregon last year for a little while the state was working hard to push it. This country is so fucking out of line. Whats next a tax when you walk down the street to get your mail? When are people going to wake the fuck up?

btw, GET RID OF YOUR FUCKING GPS AND LEARN TO READ A MAP. Those gps systems are fucking us over already.

Good thing I don't believe in driving a car. So I cant be charged for driving and have no use for GPS.

Bet my bus ticket prices will go up though. I'm already paying $1.75 every time I board the damn thing.

Even more interesting, is an EU proposal to ban ALL POLLUTING TRAFFIC in EU cities by 2050. In addition they're hoping to cut way back on short hop air traffic to southern Europe. They must take these extreme measures to reduce emissions to fight global climate change.

Interesting that not ONE US news source is covering this story... The Oil industry forbids any such discussion cause it might catch on in the US... Is the US media still being told what to publish and what not to?

I wouldn't be surprised if they tax miles...they are already adding taxes to everything else under the sun...

Anything to make themselves richer, right?

they are already taxing 'miles driven' with the gasoline tax. drop all tax exclusions, or curb their spending...the rest of us have a credit limit, but the governments can't live within theirs? bullshit. there is talk around of erasing the 'credit limiit'; if that is done, 'money' will be exposed for the fraudulent idea that it is. it morphed from metal coins to paper bills to digits...and doesn't exist at all except in the minds of consumers. the house of cards may come crashing down if these idiots don't get a handle on their wasteful habits of buying votes and sucking up to international corporations.

if the governments want to raise revenue, all they have to do is set up speed traps on the interstates, instead of ignoring the 10+ over driving.

whatever the tax, they never get enough until the public says 'enough'.

This pisses me off so fucking much. What do they mean there short on Federal funding?!? The feds make fucking rediculous amounts of money from corperate support, under the table $$, carruption, free loading off banks politicians like if they just took 25% of their total pay checks we could have roads made of kriptonite...

What are you guys on about? This is good news. Anything to stop more polluting vehicles clogging up the road and air is fucking great. Maybe this will mean no more morons driving around aimlessly with nowhere to go, and maybe people will actually think before they take a route which is less than the shortest to where they are going. I suppose just because it's the "guv'ment" you're all against it, but I say whatever it takes to stop stupidity is fine in my book. I'd personally be happy if they slapped a tax on all low efficiency vehicles, if not banning them outright.

Of course the oil industry is involved. And the media is behind them. The EU is about 200 years ahead of the US, as are many other parts of the world.

Wouldn't you pay more per gallon of fuel in taxes if your car is more efficient?

If I'm really, really careful, and conditions are just right, I can get 500 miles off one tank (11 gallons) in my Civic Hybrid. The guy filling up next to me would pay less if he only drove 200 miles on those same 11 gallons.

This is like Big Brother and money-driven greed rolled into one.

    1. That means tracking people.

    2. Aren't cars expensive as it is? Isn't gas expensive as it is? So, to add to that, one would have to pay for a device and taxes for how much they drive!?

Stop wasting money on the drug war, and then you'll have your money. Besides, using hemp as fuel means cheaper gas prices, no need to tax and no damage to the environment.

I mean, how low does the government need to keep going that they're ACTUALLY discussing and considering this? The Congressional Budget Office is such a joke. The fact that they think they're being reasonable disturbs me.

Next tax code: #1=How much did you make?

    #2=Send it in.

I honestly don't think this is such a bad idea. This is the push we need to stop being so dependent on oil and to create better public transportation.

I would only support this if the money taxed was guaranteed to go towards creating a nationwide network of public transportation. We need to invest massive amounts of money into our infrastructure as far as public transportation goes. Create high speed rails connecting all major cities in the US. Create subway systems. Create clean, electric bus systems like San Francisco has in place.

The only thing I don't like about this is the tracking of miles. This could potentially allow the government to know exactly where you are in your vehicle at all times, which is completely invasive.

The way I see it is this is a direct attack on Hybrids and electric vehicles. They stand to loose a fortune in gas tax revenues from 'green' cars so they want to set up an infrastructure to recoup this when they become mainstream. The problem is this could setback the drive to go green for many.

Some of the people in this country could do with an incentive to stop them using their cars so much. It's time people realised that cars are a luxury, not an inexhaustible means of travel. Some people round here need to learn to walk to the market to get their groceries, or take a bike like I do.
