There's a stray cat my mother has fed for a year now. He is now tame enough to touch, and has a giant abscess on his face. I thought it was getting better, and when I left awhile back on a trip, thought nothing of it other than reminding my mother she must get him neutered; I can't afford it as a student nurse and she has the vet friend.

I return, and the abscess is the size of a ping pong ball and pulsating. I debride the area and spray with triple antibiotic spray. Today I started him on a 10 day course of antibiotics after draining the wound again. It's draining on its own, but I know when something needs aid to drain. It was significantly better today, but my question is this: How soon can he be neutered and placed in a home? Also, does anyone know anything to make this heal up faster? Today, the sore is more crater-like and leaves a trail of thick, green fluid down his face. I cleaned him a bit, but am unsure how much I should leave to Mother Nature.

His appetite is also affected. Right now he is resting quietly in my bedroom and I am waiting on him to eat. I will throw him out in 3 or 4 hours once I have to sleep, since he is an unneutered male. Any advise is appreciated regarding poor Mr. Yucky. :)

I am no vet, but my cat has had run ins with other animals that have left him with injuries that have abscessed. Though Mr. yucky's wound may be getting better, the green fluid sounds like it is still infected. If nothing you're doing is working, perhaps it would be a good idea to take him to a vet (I know the bill can be a pain!), but he may need a draining tube/stitches and oral antibiotics. you may even be able to get advice over the phone, to make sure bringing him in is necessary. This is the course of treatment that worked for my cat. Hope all works out ok. Good luck!
