I don't know about there, but I live in California and they are pretty easy to grow here, people often just grow them because they're pretty and don't even want the pods for opium! I used to steal the ones growing in my niehborhood and make opium tea out of them. Just look up the growing conditions, like if they need full sun or what.I'm pretty sure they can grow anywhere.
You would be hard pressed to find them growing wild, just pick up some McCromick poppy seeds from the store, find a non shaded place and scatter them everywhere, once the flower has come in a gone with you will about 2 weeks to harvest opium from the pod or if you want to take the whole pod wait until it turns brown and take it then. You can harvest opium by cutting the pod in a 2 or 3 places and coming back the next day to collect it. You can do this about twice/week.
Yeah, Ive been wanting to start a little poppy garden, but I think Im going to scatter them in some woods, nowhere near my house though, just in case! Seems like this would be a much better way to go than constantly buying on the street? We are heading into summer now, so will they still sprout and grow if it gets all hot and humid? thanks BTW, does anyone else think its freakin crazy you can get opium poppy plants from some seeds bought from a grocery store?!!! LOL
