Has anyone ever been in the wake of a natural disaster? I've never been in a life threatening type situation from one. I was in Houston when Hurricane Ike hit. I was staying on the North End of Houston which is a big inland anyway, so all I saw were some strong winds and a couple days of rain. A lot of my coworkers were without power, so one of them came to stay with me in Fort Worth for a few days. I've also seen two tornadoes a couple miles away, one in Denton and one in the Desert. I was in one very minor earthquake as a kid. A four or so.

In March..2008...i was living in a mobile home...and we got hit with a bad tornado...it was too late for me to leave...having no storm shelter...i was stuck!!! Sirens blaring...i opened the door to look outside..stupid yea...but i heard the tornado..it sounded like a train..ground rumbling and all...i went back in ..grabbed my dog lol..went into the bathtub..he was growling...wanting out i felt helpless..and stupid for being in the fucking bath tub...we got out ...i looked out my window...seen something that looked like star wars..i thought i was in the middle of the tornado and that's what the sky looked like...because there were explosions all over in the sky...turned out the power plant which is like 3 miles from me...was struck by the tornado..went through some sort of shutdown that the city said was "normal"...scared the hell out of me...lol We all survived but lots died all over ..especially missouri..those very same storms...we were without power for about a week...
I live in California, plenty of shake n bake. I experienced the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989 which caused the bay bridge (connecting Oakland to San Francisco) to collapse and some fatalities. I was young though and don't have a great memory of it but apparently I was laughing when it was happening. Have I been laughing at some of the lesser magnitude earthquakes that have happened since? Not so much, although occassionally the rolling ones can be kind of a trip, the swaying side to side ones scare the crap out of me though.
There really is some an immense awe inspiring nature about natural disasters isn't there. The really big ones usually end up in large loses of life, especially in developing countries, although with the Japan tsunami and Katrina it's pretty obvious nobody is immune from the force of nature. I'm sort of a disaster junkie.
moderately large la earthquakes, '71 [sylmar] and '94 [northridge] being evacuated was fun when i was 10, i don't think i had a clue small blizzards and such since moving to montana prefer to live out the rest of my miserable life in as much peace and quiet as possible
Yeah we had a very bad ice storm in 09. Every town but mine got hammered with it...we just got a lot of flooding and some roads came up. Its nothing compared to a tornado or hurricane, but, luckily, here in MA, we don't have many disasters
