Here in the middle of rural nowhere southern Illinois I rent out two houses, 2 bedroom, bath, central ac and an acre or so of ground for $200. to $300. a month. It boggles the mind to think of a basement room for $1200. Ain't greed great.

Everywhere i've lived the rent is always high. Rent should not be 1/2 or even 1/3 your months income. Its absurd and everywhere. Houses for sale are so over priced as well. Nobody put a bid on the house in months so the lower it .00002%.....

Hey Lodog, I'm about 25 miles south of Carbondale/SIU. It's a county of about 17,000 folks, lots of hills and forest. I know the area you're talkin about though I seldom ever get up there. Big ass lake at Carlyle!

saw it a while ago on /b/.

He'd have my vote if I where there. He got into politics to call attention to a problem, and if he ever goes viral enough, to fix it. One of the worlds only honest politicians.

my monthly mortgage payment is the same on a 3-2 with 2 car garage, shed in back and huge lawns as it was to rent a 900 sq ft shack near downtown.
    Rent is too damn high.
But now that is in my favor, so what do I care....

I found a cute 650 sq ft one bedroom apartment in a nice area of Miami for $750, but it's nothing fancy and it doesn't include water like most apartments do. If you move to Miami Beach a lot of the places charge by the day or week. I've seen some places going for $1,000 to $2,000 a week!

For just over $700 a month you can get a 90 square foot microstudio in Manhattan's upper west side. 12 feet by 7 feet, with no kitchen.

Plenty of room, and cheap. You just have to be careful not to step in the toilet when you get out of the shower, lol.

that's very funny, the wife went to siu

i'm always teasing her about moving all of us to cairo

half cause she's horrified by the idea, half cause i think it's one of the coolest towns in america

"cool" being entirely defined by my own strange tastes

bet the rent is cheap there . . .

Interesting developments in the UK - from April 1st [how very appropriate...] the government has moved to limit the amount of rent help to those who qualify for it, meaning many will now be very hard-pressed to meet the rent.

The official reasoning for this seems to be that if people can no longer afford to meet the rent, landlords will lower their demands to meet the new lower level.

Can you see the flaw in this plan ? Like, the landlords kicking out their old tennants and renting to someone who can afford the high rents.

"Private landlords lowering rents. That’s a good one. We are told constantly of the shortage of rentable properties in most areas where work is available – supply and demand. It’s simple economics. My own landlord had five tenants to choose from before I moved into my rented accommodation.

The crux of it is – landlords can cherry pick who they want. Why? Because there’s a shortage of housing."

Cairo is cool in its own very strange way. Yep, lots of Shotgun style houses available...But I'd pitch a tent and live down by the confluence myself...That is totally cool there
