Hi guys, I just stumbled upon this site while looking for info on maintaining my new (now 4 days old) dreads. I see everyone here seems to be against a lot of things I was told (by friends with dreads, other web sites etc.) to do, so I'm just wondering what you guys did at the very beginning. What kinds of things did you do daily? Is palm rolling still a good idea, or not? Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated. Anyway, here's a couple pics. These are from the second day and please don't hate me, but I used wax! I hadn't found this site yet. I'm definitely re-thinking using anymore... And the elastics lol. I guess that's pretty taboo as well but I have them fairly loose on the base.
Hahaha I know! I didn't realize it was that big lol. Re-sized it. How are the nose pores looking? Good?
joking a little. Sweet dreads man. I can't grow any for fear of unemployment. Music, spencers, and hot topics are rare in Kentucky.
Awww, well you could always try IKEA haha. They don't mind But I'm assuming you have a real job already lol.
That suks donkey balls man. As long as they're kept tidy you shouldn't have any problems. I've worked with the NHS, Crown/County Courts and now work as a Civil Servant. Never had any problems finding work, just there isn't many full times jobs avail
hi, welcome to the forum! about the dreads I guess it depends on how tidy you want them if you want them to be really tidy (because you have a job or whatever) you could use a crochet hook to maintain them (but don't overdo it 'cause it causes breakage) But if you don't care how they look just do nothing, rip them once in a while to prevent congos (if you don't want them) and keep them clean.
Definitely don't use any more wax. It is sooo bad for sooo many reasons. Mostly it collects dirt, doesn't wash out completely, keeps knots from forming (you want knots...that's what makes dreads), attracts bugs (gross), and traps in moisture which can lead to mildew. Yeah, all bad things. As for the rubber bands, I used them on my first set and it was a HUGE mistake. They eventually began to fall apart as I washed my dreads and became all sticky and gross. Don't worry so much about the loose parts. They will tighten as your dreads mature. I have to be honest with ya. Dreads look really crazy and messy until they begin to mature. Usually around 6 months they start looking really good and only get better from there. In truth you don't need to do anything but separate congos if you don't want them to form. Palmrolling should be done in the shower, it just works better when your dreads are wet for some reason. But don't do it too much. It can cause some of the hair to rip out at your scalp and make the root of the dread weak and after a while the dread will fall off. So be careful with that. You can crochet your dreads to make them a bit more neater. But I don't suggest doing it on dreads under 6 months. Don't go crazy with crocheting either or you will damage the hair. When I needed my hair to look neat I put them in a dread bun and went about my business. You want them as loose as possible so they can knot properly. But putting them up for a bit while you're at work or something is totally fine. Just don't use a tight band or you'll create a weak spot on the dread which can eventually lead to breakage.
If you leave the rubber bands in for so long, through washes, until they melt and get stuck in your hair. They'll melt and get stuck in your hair. So yeah, careful with that
welcome to the forum and kudos on reading around before posting. you'll get a thick skin here. melt the wax out take the bands out wash often, and dry them wait about 6-10 mos and you should see some nice locks forming
I don't understand why you feel the need to be so fucking rude when I already said that I had not read any of this when I put the wax in, and that I would be stopping. The line between constructive criticism and douchebagery is not that fine, thank you to those of you who understand this.
theres a lot of douchebags here dont worry. Idk why they try and act all hard over the internet because you didnt read rules on a website. instead of posting rude replies why dont you actually post something useful for him? i dont have dreads but i would suggest that you private message someone who was actually helpful and they should be able to help you. dont worry about the douchebags, theres some helpful people here to
Yeah, I noticed that while I was lurking. I guess it wasn't THAT rude, I didn't mean to snap, I just had a shitty day. I've yet to get over the self-conscious aspect of such a radical change and that's exactly what I feel like EVERYONE is thinking when they look at me. "Man that guys hair is fucking gross...". I'll get used to it, it'll be worth it in the end.
Don't Give The're Comments A Second Thought Mate. I'm At The 20 Month Mark And Iv'e Been Cruising Very Well As Far As Negative Comments Go, TILL THIS MORNING When I Was In The Chemists Having Lots Of Jokes With The Staff, When The Owner Dropped A Clanger By Saying GLEN Why Don't You Get Yourself A Decent Hairdresser. My Reply Was Paul, That Was A Bit Mean.... When I Walked To The Front Of The Shop To Pay, Three Of The Staff Walked With Me And Said Ignore Him, He's Been A Real Smartass Lately.... Came Home, Sat Down To Lunch And Thought About His Comment, Came Up With The Conclusion That After Just Announcing The Opening Of His Third Store He Was Getting A Bit Full Of Himself.... Yes He May Be Making Lots Of Money, But No Amount Of Money Can Buy "Class And Breeding".... Cheers Glen.
Unless you want neglect dreads, you're going to get elitists telling you why you fail at life and that you 'don't understand dreads'. Fortunately, a huge part of having dreads is learning to not give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks, it's quite ironic really.
