I was talking to my pastor the other day about the use of the term "Baby Christian". He used in in the sense that some Christians do not mature in the faith. I pointed out to him that we our faith should be as the faith of a child - according to the words of Jesus. I teach kindergartners in bible study and oh how I long to see Gods world thru their eyes. The amazement in seeing a rainbow, a butterfly, a kitten, a magic trick - with eyes unclouded by the darkness in the world around us. It seems some of the joy, the newness, the awe has be damped by knowledge of this world. There are times when this world needs to be blocked from our eyes and our minds so we can see the true beauty and wonder that has been created all around us. Does anyone else feel this - or is it just my immaturity in the faith that causes me to long for such things?
I get what you're saying. We see what we focus on. If you always focus on the good, you'll see the good. However there is bad in the world too. But isn't that what makes the good so good? You can't block out the world and see the good in it too. You have to take the good with the bad.
I get what your pastor is saying. I am student teaching a class of gr. 2s and do their morning routine (with intercessory prayer) and they can be amazingly perceptive for the needs of people (some jumped right on praying for thise dead and sick in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami). However, we also have adults who view the world throgh the wrong type of children's eyes. They eyes of a willed ignorance in which some complexities of the faith are not sought, and therfore not truly beleived. I know of some Catholics who, for example, do not really know what the Mass is truly about and what happens to the bread and wine at the Consecration. I'd call these people more ill informed and poorly catachised, rather than baby Catholics. There are also those that view Church as a social or ethnic club, rather than a place and means to grow in holiness and love and serve God. These could be "babies" in that sense as well. I'd have probed further to find out more clearly what he meant.
Done that - dozens of times. Acid too - hundreds of times. Perhaps if I had some Orange Sunshine it might clear my eyes a bit.
