    antiviral
    immune stimulator
    anti-parasitic

and it will keep away vampires. :p

just picked up a couple of heritage varieties to plant in the garden this fall. russian hardnecks

i need to include more raw garlic into my diet. in the winter, i like to add minced raw garlic to soups just before they're served, it preserves the medicinal properties. cooked garlic just isnt the same.

i've also used raw garlic as a poultice for cold symptoms. it worked quite nicely.

I find eating raw garlic makes me cantankerous, so I will only eat it raw if I have the flu or suffering fatigue.

BTW when a garlic plant is fully grown and has not started to die of, you can pull up the whole plant and use it as a vegetable. Similar to a leak.

Would you like any info on growing garlic?

sure! i just picked up a few cloves from the market, planning to put them away until fall to plant. from what i understand, you put single cloves into the ground in late sept to mid oct and then harvest them the next july. :) i like to put them into the edges of the garden as sentinals against pests. i see them as being protective plants. lovely, definitely do try it, it's so good, and good for you. especially in soup season. this time of year, i try to get garlic into my salad dressings

my salad dressings look something like this:
olive oil (first cold pressed~extra virgin), evening primrose oil, sesame seed oil
applecider vinegar, lime juice or lemon juice
pumpkin seed butter, tahini, sunflower seed butter
fresh herbs and spices depending on what's calling out to me from the garden (minced garlic would fall into this category)
sea salt and fresh ground pepper

Where you live Nimh sounds like a temperate climate so you are going to need the sunniest spot possible. Ideally garlic grows best in a Mediterranean climate but that is not to say it is impossible to grow where you are. Does anyone else grow garlic where you are? The onion family – actually it is the lily family – is the one few section of food production where the agri-chemical companies don’t do much business. It is limited to anti-sprouting spray for garlic so when anyone is buying garlic to plant, it must not have been sprayed. What you have bought looks like it has not been sprayed. What type of soil do you have? Can you get hold of compost or have any on hand? Can you buy aged chicken manure or fish fertilizer? The lily family are one of the few edible plants that do not do well with blood & bone fertilizer. Do you have any rose bushes? These are good companions for garlic but not essential to have.

Hey Nimh, your salad dressings sound wonderful!

Getting back to garlic, when the tops have withered and died off, harvest by levering out with a large flat blade screwdriver.Do not wash. Hang up in a warm , dry airy space for a week. Then store in a cool dry place.

i think a lot of pple grow garlic around here. there's a guy on a neighbouring island who specializes in the stuff~he's even got a chocolate bar with his garlic in it~~and we're talking really nice imported belgian chocolate. i guess they dont have a website, but it's Gabriola Garlic's Definitely Different Chocolate.

anyways, this year i'm trying out some heritage varieties of garlic. in previous years, i've just grown a few grocery store cloves that had already started sprouting in my kitchen. lol

An old remedy to prevent your breath from smelling is to eat some fresh parsley; hence chopped parsley is often used in garlic butter especially in garlic bread.

Garlic tablets can be better than nothing at all. In the hot Australian Summer if I have not had galic handy I sometimes take garlic tablets to avoid fatigue.

to optimize the allacin content of garlic crush and let sit at room temp for 10 minutes. then add to cooked food just before serving to let it warm.

i looooove roasted garlic. it's buttery smooth and so good on steamed greens. even when i'm cooking a roast or chicken in the crock pot i toss in a few bulbs of garlic to let them roast. not as many anti-cancer properties when roasted but so yummy :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE garlic and cook it more than most people would like (maybe not)

but OP, considering your first post i'm starting to wonder how good a diet heavy in garlic is for someone with an autoimmune disease, and who's body is already attacking healthy parts of the body for no apparent reason....sorry this was random, but things like this are of ever pressing importance to me. Plus I definitely think we can help our bodies by figuring out on an individual basis, what benefits and poisions our bodies...

Sorry if this was a pointless post.

it is my understanding that garlic can help the autoimmune cascade in rheumatoid arthritis by interrupting one of the steps. however a person with ra would want to avoid echinacea (another immune booster) as it exacerbates ra. you're right that autoimmune disorders are tricky.

was there a certain autoimmune disorder that you were concerned about?

i think that it is prudent to omit any food from the diet that causes problems for that individual. we are all different and we are all our own experts on our own health or dis~ease

I say that everyone should eat raw garlic. I find if I just chew on it, I can get a nasty stomach ache...so a way to prevent this is to chew on a piece of ginger root after or add the raw garlic in once the meal is ready to be eaten.
