there used to be a forum that looked more suitable for this question but I think it got made private.

Basically I can't find any information on how to determine where to dig a well other than "use a dowsing rod". I know not to put it around animals but I'm wondering if there's any way to tell where there will be an underground water pocket just from looking above ground. Any other advice about wells and their structure/digging techniques is appreciated :)

I realize that this thread is a bit old, and there is a chance that you are no longer visiting the site. However....

Mother Earth News is a publication that has a great wealth of information about homesteading. Including providing water from a well. I believe that if you look, you won't have to spend a lot of time to get all the information you need. Just do a Google search on Mother Earth News, then search their site for "Hand Dug Wells".

Is there a way to tell without drilling? No... not for sure.

A good dowser can find water most of the time, however, finding a good one can be difficult in some areas. You can also learn how to do it yourself...

But, it will always be a gamble. That is why even professional well drilling companies charge to drill you a hole, not to get you water... If they drill and don't hit water, you still pay for the empty hole.

If there aren't new copies available anymore, look on Amazon. That's where I got my copy from, but that's been a few years ago too. It's a book that has far more information than just wells. Well worth the money.
