My friend is in class right now (college) and he said a girl's thesis statement for her paper is "Seat belts save lives, but seat belt laws are unnecessary because they protect individuals who do not value their lives."

    What. The. Fuck.

Someone who knows what they're talking about. Sure there are good people who get nailed by cars, while they aren't wearing seatbelts. But there are the bad eggs too.

The majority of them are too stupid to wear the thing, or really don't care enough about life to want to protect it with a seat belt. If you do not instinctively protect yourself with a device that is put there for your safety, and insures you'll live another day...your either stupid or you don't care.

Yeah, sounds like a good thesis.

I agree ^^^ If you're just buckling up the follow some law, then you're not doing it for the right reasons.

And I still love the shit out of your dancing ferret.

Not only that, some people seem to lack a significant grasp on what life really is. Their too worried about their cell phones, radio stations, and looking at the mangled wreck of another poor soul on the side of the road. I don't know about much but after I took LSD for the first time, I wore a seat belt even if we're just pulling out of the driveway.

Seat belt laws are unnecessary, it should be a personal choice.

My responsibility as a driver is to other drivers and my passengers, If I don't want to wear a seatbelt, I shouldn't be required to.

That being said, I drive for a living, and spend a lot of time on the road, I would never drive without a seatbelt.

the way she phrased the thesis is slightly retarded. Seatbelt laws are unneccessary though. A better thesis would be, "Seatbelt laws are unneccessarily because responsible adults should be able to make an educated decision to wear a seat belt or not."

Yes, this is what I mean. It's just very outlandish. Like that's the reason we don't need seatbelt laws. It almost makes it sound like people who don't wear seat belts don't deserve to live so we should make it easier for them to die.

    lol, it's an otter!

I do find myself just staring at it every now and then-and then I go 'what am I doing-that's all it's going to do".

I've always wore a seatbelt out of habit. I totaled a truck 6 years ago and the only reason I walked away was from wearing one. It scares me not to wear one now.

We have far too many laws that should be personal choice. Wearing the seatbelt is just one.

my brother totaled his truck and the cop told him that the only reason he survived was because he was not wearing his seatbelt. His truck flipped and the roof caved in. If he was wearing a seatbelt he would not have been able to lean over and avoid getting crushed.

I think the cop told him like 25% of the time a seatbelt can actually hurt rather than help. the other 75% of the time they do save lives. I'll take my chances with the 75%; I never go anywhere without putting my seatbelt on first.

I always get pissed of at my mom because she never wears her seatbelt. Especially my sister. One time she went freaking nuts and started crying to her because she had a friend who died in an accident.

Yeah, my friend's aunt would've been crushed when her truck flipped but she rolled into the backseat because she wasn't wearing her seatbelt.

    exactly!
i hate that laws pander to the stupid. the lowest common denominator dictates the rules. and cops cant even use their own judgement because they have quotas to fill. if you are speeding 20 over, and no one else is on the road, who are you gonna hurt? i think you should be allowed to take risks.

personal story: my uncle would have been killed in an accident if he had been wearing his seatbelt. from what i understand the seatbelts are (or were, it was awhile ago) mounted to the bed of the truck, not the cab. the cab separated from the bed and turned 180 degrees. had he been belted in he would have been severed at the waist.

Can the same be said for roller coasters?

(I always use it when I´m driving or riding shotgun. But almost never when I´m in the back seat. No idea why.)

i never wear seatbelts.. honestly.. from people i know or have talked with.. more often then not(this is in the case of people i know) they were not wearing seat belt during an accident.. in which they probably would have died had they been wearing it... some were due to being able to maneuver faster to get out of the car or jump to another seat to avoid being killed..

Personally i prefer to have the option to bail immediately instead of being held in place

I know its an otter...I thought it was a ferret when I was baked...and then spent about 5 minutes wondering what a ferret was doing with a fish.

So I know its an otter, but it amuses me to call it a ferret. :D
