My hair is tightening at a normal pace, but my roots are still normal straight unknotted hair. I didnt use any product and I have lots of loose hairs and im already staring to congo. its only been like 5 months since i officially started(since i decided that my hair had gone so long without brushing that dreads were coming if i wanted it or not) And ive had mad dandruff for a few months. are their any suggestions, or anyone that has went through the same experence as me?

I poured white Apple cider vinegar on my head and washed it off to get rid of dandruff it works you just gotta deal with the smell for an hour.

An inch or so of straight hair at the roots is totally OK. In fact you want some play in your roots, if things were knotted all the way to the scalp it would tug, pull, and generally not be comfy for your scalp. Don't worry, as the roots grow out they'll knot up just fine.

I let the vinegar in my dreads so im assuming it doesnt matter but if there not really mature yet try to keep it just on the scalp cause it did loosen my ends quite a bit

most of mine are 2 inches too, some are half the dread. Don't worry they will dread as they mature.
And easy on the vinegar, it acts as a conditioner, I recomend once or twice a month but not more.

    Yup

Rubbing will make your roots seem tighter... I used to do it on occasion, but really it's a pain in the ass and can cause breakage if you do it too much.

No, that's a bloody stupid waste of time, and damages your locks.

It's better to have loose roots than tight roots, and if clockwise rubbing worked, you'd know this. But neglect does work, so I know this.

Ive been keeping with the neglect method, but its a pain, and im tired of hiding my hair under a bandana, and im super fearful of breakage. does negleck actually tighten your roots, because naturally your hair wants to grow straight like those playdough people, and I just want my roots a little tighter because my hair looks like a mess in a ponytail with such long roots.

give it time, it's only been 5 months!
forget about them, they will dread on their own

if your roots were tightened to the scalp you dreads probably wouldn't sit well, kinda of a side show bob thing going on..
rubbing them does tighten them up, but there was a thread up here a few weeks ago of someone who swore by rubbing claiming their hair was thinning so yeahhh.
this always seems to be my answer for everything but when my hair is really messy (no good for work) i just crochet the loose hair in. i haven't really done the whole shaft of the dread in a bit but taking the loose hair and working it into the first 2 or 3 inches seems to clean them up quite a bit.
but, it's your hair. do what you want :)

Neglect is NOT a pain. If it's a pain, it ain't neglect.

I hid my hair for maybe 2 months of neglect. Then I realized it was going to be on my fucking head, and people would be looking at it, so I better get used to it. If you can't figure this out dreads ain't for you.

I neglected, used NO locking aid other than frequent soapy lathering. I had some roots that got painfully tight, There's one time I split one lock into two at the base, because the root was hurting. When I cut, I hard a very hard time getting a clipper with a 1 inch guide through my hair, I had to basically remove all my roots and comb it before I could use the clipper, though I'd originally planned to just run it through and be done with it. Took me about two hours from the first lock I took off, before I could get a clipper through my hair without pain, and that includes lots of strategic cutting, combing, and two showers with a half bottle of conditioner.

*edit* don't think I literally split it..... I did, however, use sharp things to alter the locking at the base.

If you're worried about what people think of your hair, you'd best find a new hairstyle.

Locks have strait hair at the base. It's how they are, it's not an ailment to be fixed. That space varies for different people, but it's part of the physics of how your hair locks. Deal with it, or cut your hair. It can be very obvious if you have short locks still, or fresh neglect locks, because they often work UP towards your scalp. DEAL with it.

roor this guy is just asking a question.. gear down, big rig!
like, honestly, dude. i know you hate this but neglect is not the ONLY way to lock up your hair. yeah, it's the most natural blah blah other ways 'hurt' your hair blah blah but really, if neglect isn't working for him he can do other shit as long as it's all in moderation.

cararnett, if you have anything else to ask go over the FAQ thoroughly, and if what you're looking for isn't there, ask away. there are a lot of people here with a lot of different answers, it's up to you to figure it out.

EDIT:: as an afterthought, roor's right to an extent. if you chose to go neglect, push it as far as you can. seriously, your dreads will look amazing in the end if you go the distance.

but yeah, there's stuff you CAN do, it's just a matter of whether or not you'll regret it.

    Gear down: no reasons provided.

He says he's neglecting, and has unrealistic expectations, for ANY method. You can't just hide your air all the time, not only do you look silly and uncomfortable with yourself, it makes you even less comfortable with yourself, which is the opposite of what locks should do.

By the way, I just said neglect can hurt, and cited that mine had. I didn't say other ways do. But no matter what way anyone uses, having tight roots can and likely will hurt, to some degree.

This is true. Not only is it silly to hide your hair, it prevents proper locking to keep your hair up or hidden all the time. op talks about having hair in a ponytail, then complains of having a congo and loose roots and dandruff...

RooR may say things in a blunt, "suck it up" kind of way, but if somebody had said that to me three years ago I'd be on my 4th year.

So my advice to op is let your hair do what it wants. Whether you're going neglect, t&r or backcombing, it's gonna basically do the same thing overall. It's GOING to look like crap for a while. you just have to hang in there and be patient. It won't look bad forever. :2thumbsup: You've come this far, you can do it.

And loose roots are good, natural, you want them there. Don't worry about them.

I say leave it. it will do it's thang. The ACV will help with the dandruff but as others have already said it conditions so it wont help with tightening your roots to well. i use acv like every other wash. some may say thats too much but it works for me.

Dreadhead- Please look at the date of the thread before posting. Bringing back a bunch of older threads is kind of annoying.
