Hi all...new to this forum and it looks like a fun place to hang. I'm living in E.Europe in a country where it's legal to grow poppies and a lot of people around here use poppy tea. Poppy seed cooking is a big part of their cuisine as well. Here at the local grocery you can by 500g of poppy seeds for 1 Euro! I planted them and they all grew so now I'm gonna be making tea, I guess. Any Ideas on how SWIM should make it? At the moment SWIM's attempting to make tea from 8 heads of my own poppies grown wild. Cheers, BW
My method is to grind the pods up and let them soak in cold water with a little bit of grapefruit juice and alcohol. 30 minutes should be long enough. I stopped using them after reading about people's opiate dependency issues on another forum that I post on. I don't want to go through the same things that others have gone through.
Grapefruit juice? I've heard everything from using a bit of something acidic...like vinegar or citric juices, to adding alcohol. Although some say the alcohol only makes certain non-desirable alkaloids dissolve into your soup. Dependency is ALWAYS an issue, I'm afraid. SWIM's got tons of pods...all dried. SWIM took some and ground up about 10 of them and added them to a hot water/alcohol mixture which they soaked in for 5 days. The liquid was then strained from them and condensed at low heat to form about 5 half-marble sized balls (from a sticky syrupy mess). Now, what to do with these little balls, he asks? Eat them? Mix them with chocolate? Chew on them slowly...what?
If you're new to poppy tea or opiates, start with a low dose--3-5 medium pods. Here's how I do it: -Crack pods open and remove seeds -Grind using a weed grinder -Steep in hot water (not boiling) for 30 minutes -Strain, add cinnamon/ginger and drink Viola! Sweet dreams.
