I could not see it posted so just thought i would.. I have no problem with GM, food never have . http://www.biomedcentral.com/news/20041124/04 http://business.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=1373122004 it goes against this http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994283 The New study was over 4 years , is it more reliable ? Anyone going to change their point of view ?? does anyone have a point of view on this .
My major issue with GM foods is the patent holding. Also, can GM crops be harvested for their seeds and replanted, like heirlooms? I was under the impression that they could not. Poor people need to be able to harvest seed and replant in following years and not have to pay for it. Everyone should be able to grow their own food, if they so wish to. And they should not have to worry about their neighbor's crop pollinating theirs and then getting sued over it. Monsanto really irritates me...
You have just summed up all those that appose GM , i have ever heard .. If you have the patience to read ??.. The thead i started Other stuff More stuff Its all fascinating not scarey imho. Don't think i have any answers for that one .. No PR is going to fix that place in the hearts of the masses.
I read thru some threads... It is a lot of reading, though and my eyes aren't happy at the moment. LOL I've been researching this on my own, for quite some time, now. I can't really quote any specific sources, because I get my info from lots of different places. My concerns are not that GM food is unsafe to eat. I really don't believe that it is. I do have a problem with foods that have BGH and other hormones in them, but that is a different issue, not a GM issue. I'm sure that GM foods are fine, nutritionally, comparable to current food supplies. But I know that our current food supplies are not very nutritious, either. But, that's another thread, as well... My concern is that growing GM foods encourages the uses of herbicides and pesticides and other chemicals on our Earth. Current farming practices have stripped the topsoil and more and more chemicals are needed, to grow food. This concerns me. My second concern is the fact that Monsanto has sued those farmers who's "normal" crops were accidentally contaminated by their neighbors GM crops. That is just wrong to me. I cannot believe that they have been able to do that. The other thing that concerns me is the heirloom issue. That was something that I did not see addressed in that thread of yours that I read. Last I heard, GM seed could not be harvested. Like many hybrids, the plants cannot reproduce. This is a great concern to me, since I believe that the way to help the poor feed themselves, is by teaching them sustainable farming practices, one of which is harvesting seed for future use. If they have to buy their seed every year, that is money that should otherwise be invested in their farms and families. I have strong feelings about sustainable farming practices and I haven't seen anything that says that GM foods are conducive to this. I dunno. I'm certainly not here to argue with anyone.
well damn i thought this thread had something to do with General Motors until i got to the links, damn
sorry .. Its a difficult one that, i read conflicting reports all the time .. i think its whos propaganda you want to believe anti GM prople don't do any research or and are never going to say 'sorry we are wrong' so i go with the people that at least do the research/studies . I think this was a problem a few years ago , i don't think it is a problem now.. it was used by the people that say 'frakenfood' and other such lovely words. I dunno either, its all hugely puzzling . I don't wish to argue with anyone either... The GM Mirage Will Not Help the Poor GM Crops: A Farmer's Dream? Geneticaly Modified organisms Asia holds the key to the future of GM food Agbioview EU law
I don't like gmo, because it takes everyone the choice, or do you think that gm corn doesn't spread, just because you're tellin it, that it shouldn't spread??? Look, in Germany, we have Löwensenf, a Mustarddip-brand. The mustard used came from Canada, and other countries, where they grow a lot GM-stuff. Now the german Magazine Öko-Test, which tests the quality of food,... found out, that the used mustard was polluted with GM. The reason was, gm rape, and because mustard and Rape belong to the same plantfamily, the Rape polluted the mustard, and now that mustrad has the genetics in it. The big concerns like monsanto, also steal the genetics, like of the indian wheat, and trie to patent it, and so every indian Farmer would have to pay licensing fees for growing his own wheat!!! The problem with GMO is that you can't trust it!
Choice is important, i don't want total GM domination ...but were it is wanted and were it is suitable , why not?. I have a problem with the thought of major corporations owning the seed ...but drug companys do the same thing with their patents.. if they are shafting (taking advantage of ) indian farmers, thats bad . http://sify.com/finance/fullstory.php?id=13582831 Monsanto lost. The Indian wheat story is a bit of bad look for Monsanto in a way http://www.organicconsumers.org/Patent/biopiracy_wheat.cfm its how you interpret it ... http://www.countercurrents.org/en-shiva270404.htm Heritage History passing things down through the generations aww how sweet ...this all does in the end serve to feed into the un wholesome view of GM technology ??.
I think it should be "Grow your own food or buy direct from farmers" It is important that we support the local produce infrastructure in the shadow of a looming oil crisis. Communities with large supported family farms will not be hit as hard as cities where people will literally run out of food. (People who lived through the oil embargo know what I mean) On the studies-who funded them? If one was funded by GM or a competitor of GM you might think twice about the findings.
The vast majority of research is not funded by GM or a competitor .. that would be very conveniant for people that don't like GM. The trials that are within this thread are independant (ok, as far as i am aware). I agree with your first couple of points, after the oil crisis bit you lost me i am afraid. You might find this intresting .. ?? http://money.guardian.co.uk/ethicalmoney/story/0,1356,1284800,00.html
