    Ah okay, I understand then.

If that is correct, I totally understand why you feel like that.

Why aren't your sister allowed to go to the United States?

On another note, how can it be a free country when you can't do what you want (like smoking marijuana, for example)? Just curious.

I never meant to hold you here, lol. I just thought you blamed Castro for your mom leaving. You don't have to seek my permission for anything my friend. No hard feelings.

I'm not too fond of Castro. Putting aside his economic policy (I think everyone who frequents these boards knows how I feel about communism), there are plenty of other problems with Castro.

First off, there was the Cuban Missile Crisis. Castro and Kruschev are the two individuals MOST RESPONSIBLE for almost destroying the world. That alone is shocking, and in my opinion is evidence enough of Castro's questionable morals.

Now let me say this: Castro has improved over the decades. He's not as horrible as he was in the 60s, but he's still nowhere close to sainthood. He's stopped killing people (as far as anyone knows), but he still routinely imprisons political dissidents, journalists, and would-be emigrants.

I've never understood how anyone can sympathize with him, especially so-called "liberals." I, for one, am horrified by his human rights abuses, and Amnesty International condemns his government on a regular basis.

Hu? When did it become illegal to move from Cuba? I am asking out of curiousity.

Actually, I think it was in 2003, or perhaps early 2004 that some hijackers/terrorists were executed...

In the above post you asked "when did it become illegal to move from Cuba??"

Ask yoursel, as that is what you posted at the bottom of post number 15....

Aside from that...if people could leave as they wanted why in the hell are so many willing to die by coming here to the states in small boats and rafts????
Maybe you need to go read some of the "Propaganda" I posted to find out just what the hell is going on....
Now please stop asking me questions, I don't like to be mean and ignore people and I will probably come back and read if others post here but Im going to go do something else...

It's legal to move out of Cuba. But, if you have first settled down in another country, you're not allowed to go back (I think).

It costs a lot of money to travel too, and you have to go through some bureaucratic procedures, but there is no law (as far as I know) saying that it's illegal to take a trip to another country if you want to.

Most people who fled the first years did it because they were part of the mafia in the country, big businessmen, the thugs related to the governemnt, or because jobs for doctors and teachers were encouraged to move out of the urban and in to the rural areas (in order to improve health and educate the peasents, for example).

I think things would get easier for you if you loosen up. You seem to expect that everyone (at least I) is hostile towards you. Just so you know, I'm not. Take it easy

To tell you the truth, I don't know much about the guy. I don't think many americans know much about cuba or fidel due to the sanctions. It isn't really a part of ameican education.

I did see the clip of him falling on stage, and that kinda made me feel bad for him. I am a bit of a bleeding heart, though, he may not deserve for me to feel bad about him.

The sanctions we have against cuba need to be lifted, however. Communism is not a threat, and we are just causing more suffering over there. People can't help it if they are born in cuba, and we shouldn't punish cubans for being cubans.

Fidel is a dictator, but probably he did a lot of good things for the people, and he was the right one to kick out the US out of CUBA!
But the way he's acting is just dumb and bad!

I think that many people on the left side of the fence, like myself, have lost faith in the cooperate owned media and tend to trust other news sources. The sources that have proved right in my own experience tend to paint, while not a completely favorable portrait of Castro, a better picture.

I am not saying this is necessarily a good thing, but that might explain why there is more sympathy for him on the left than the right. The fact that Amnesty International isn't particularily found of the Bush administrations policies, probably adds to the incredulity.

I try to stay out of the argument, but it does seem like Cuba would fare better on an international scale, if someone else were to take over governance. I can't speak for how he fairs on the domestic front as I am currently questioning my own sources on that matter.

As you can see, I am of the John Kerry school of mixed up opinion, LOL!

The way he is acting? The way he walks? The way he eats? His policies (what policies)? I don't want to sound like a prick, but I am only asking out of curiousity.

America supported Batista, who was a dictator. They loved him cuz he was useful for american interests i.e corporations. Majority of cubans were poor and starving. What did America ever do for them? Nothing.

Fidel Castro may be a commie- but they have free education, medical facilities and nobody is starving. He brought dignity to people who never had it.

People aren't starving? You know this how? Free education does little good when you're a doctor who earns as much as a street sweeper. And even the worst hell hole of a country has medical facilities. So the U.S. supported Batista, a dictator. The U.S. has supported many dictators. What does that have to do with Castro? Castro is a dictator as well. It might also be emphasized that most of these advancements were heavily financed by the Soviet Union. Once it disintegrated, the already poor quality of life deteriorated even further. With increased human rights abuses. All in all-a regular tropical paradise, I guess!

Sorry to disrupt your Castro worship, but...
It is NOT legal to move out of Cuba. Why do you think people flee under cover of darkness in ramshackle rafts? Freedom of movement? You need authorization to move WITHIN the country, much less out of it.
As far as the people who fled---Castro, himself, like many "selfless revolutionaries" was a priveleged member of the upper middle, landowning class. He went to prestigious schools and graduated university as a lawyer (ugh!) He saw a means to seize power for himself and took it. Very altruistic. True, improvements were made, but considering the horrendous state that Spain left it, it would be difficult not to improve. All of his wonderful literacy programs, education, etc., were made possible though heavy subsidies from the soviet union. One really can't believe a lot of what comes out of cuba anyway as much of it is state-sponsored propaganda. Now that the soviet teat has dried up, castro's corrupt regime is struggling to maintain itself. The proletariat being the ruling class--Castro and his flunkies ARE the ruling class, period. You do at least seem willing to acknowledge that cuba IS in fact a communist nation, more than many on these boards are capable of admitting, and I salute you for it. And the real reason the educated classes had to go out into the country was to cut sugarcane "for the good of the country". They had no choice, they were forced to do so. They were not using their talents to help their countrymen, but to get some money into the country, and ultimately line castro's pockets. Rather than use their skills to maximum benefit, they were forced to cut cane-agrarian stalinist communism at it's best. On another note, I really think cuba's opposition to south africa's human rights abuses (laughable, considering those of castro) had A LOT to do with ending apartheid. Actually the pressure from the US and Europe ended it. Cuba's stance, besides ringing hollow, did not amount to a hill of beans. Castro may have believed his rhetoric at first, and may have had good intentions, who knows? Unfortunately, as is always the case, human nature came into play and his worker's revolution met the same fate as all worker's revolutions-tyrrany, poverty, misery, and oppression. If only his baseball career had panned out---the people of cuba may actually be free today.

America is responsible for 2 million dead people in Cambodia, 3 million dead in vietnam, human rights abuses by the dictators it gives patronage to, undermining democracy in south america i.e venezuala/Guatemala/Nicaragua/Honduras/Chile etc. which america sees as its personal property for corporate america.

From what I hear, Cubans are doing quite well now that Europeans and others are visiting cuba and bringing in money. It's the u.s fault for putting a blockade on cuba. Cubans who come to u,s are looking for better economic opportunites for sure. I don't see the u.s punishing china for being commies and human rights abusers. In fact they encourage investment in china. What pussies.

I have to agree with you on that. It is hypocritical for the US to maintain the ineffective and pointless embargo on Cuba, particularly when China is the most favored trading nation for the US. I would argue that partially because of the extensive trade with China, it is now on the road to transitioning to capitalism and increased freedom and prosperity. Why not do the same for Cuba?

Why do you think China is on the way to "freedom"?

    How would you define "freedom"?

    Thanks.

this is from a typical communist asshole . Cuba have more paved roads than any other country in central and south america "but they were built before castro" In 1959 a cuban worker made more money than a german worker. In 1959 a cuban Peso "dollar" was equal in value to a U.S dollar something few country have been able to do since 1959. the standard of living in any major city was equal to the U.S "yes there was poor people in rural areas " "we have people just as poor in rural and city right here in the U.S" Varadero Beach one of cuba most famous beaches and once home to billioner Dupont "he used to own a beach front Mansion " Today a cuban national are not allowed in that famous beach "only french, british, spaniards etc Turist are. and also Castro almost destroy the United State And Soviet Union by a fluke a total nuclear war exchange was avioded by a Hair. Castro SMUGLE weapons and advicers turn central and south america into a battle zone still raging today with castro smugle soviets and post castro weapons. and the fact that 99% of the cubans cant stand him. But Castro learn a lot from the Nazis in 1933 and he made sure in early 1960s all privately own firearms were rounded up and confiscated.
