If you have any cell phone that is turned on the government can track you. This was written into one of the communications acts in the early 2000's.

All police departments have special phone numbers that they can call, give the cell number, and within a few seconds have your location within a few blocks if you are in a major city or within a quarter of a mile in the middle of no-where.

All cell phones do this (except for the old non-digital phones).

 

The law dates back to 2001-

"all wireless devices "be able to locate 67 percent of callers to 911 within 50 meters that elect the handset solution while those using network technology must be able to locate the caller within 100 meters," a rule that expanded to cover all new cell phones by late 2002.

 

I heard that about the iphone on the news last week.

Apple has been in this game for a while though...I remember a few years back where laptop webcams were "accidentally" turning on and videotaping/recording people (students in particular who owned these for school)

 

Well you could use this knowledge to your advantage...If your up to something you doin't want tracked, turn the phone on, leave it someplace else and retrive it when your mission is completed..Actually have a trustable buddy hold it and even make a phone call while your gone...

 

Do crappy TracPhones count? There certainly aren't any't "apps" for them.

The iPhone is not logging your location. Rather, it’s maintaining a database of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers around your current location, some of which may be located more than one hundred miles away from your iPhone, to help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested. Calculating a phone’s location using just GPS satellite data can take up to several minutes. iPhone can reduce this time to just a few seconds by using Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data to quickly find GPS satellites, and even triangulate its location using just Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data when GPS is not available (such as indoors or in basements). These calculations are performed live on the iPhone using a crowd-sourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data that is generated by tens of millions of iPhones sending the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple.

and to also paraphrase steve jobs, he pretty says the accusations have been exaggerated in the past week in a public that doesn't understand their technology really. but Apple will be releasing a software update that:
- reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone,
- ceases backing up this cache, and
- deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.

i cannot be certain, but i am coming to the conclusion..if a device uses wireless of any sort (emits a cooperative radiation), it can be tracked. this site seems to disagree..
