A suicide bomber unleashed death at a popular cafe in Marrakech, Morocco. At 11:57am, just at the start of the lunch hour, the Argana cafe became a grisly scene of death, blood and destruction. At least 15 people have died and another 80 are wounded from the attack.

The Argana cafe overlooks the popular El-Fna square where locals and tourists come to eat and be entertained by snake charmers, musicians and others. I have eaten at the Argana myself as it has a great view overlooking the square.

How sad as this is likely to hurt tourism in Morocco.

  2. I love Morocco, Tangier in particular because it is such a melting pot. I know it doesn't have the glamour of Marrakesh but I prefer it because there is much less of a touristy thing going on. It is really easy for me to pop across to Morocco but after this, my partner and I are thinking seriously if the odd weekend trip over is worth the bother.

Lets hope for the sake of Morocco that this story doesn't become the gossip of the town.
Tourism is a big net gain for a lot of nations and cities and communities.

I've heard mixed reviews and opinions about visiting Morocco though. Some say the people are very bitter and nasty, whereas some have had nothing but positive things to say about the nation.

  5. I always find the people very nice. I've even been invited to a tribal wedding up in the mountains before. I do find though that a lot of them do not suffer fools ( most peeps on holiday) gladly.

I always wanted to go to morocco for the Transahara festival. Sad times we live in, where you can't even have a meal at a cafe in one of the most peaceful North African countries.

A bomb in a cafe in Marrakech wouldn't stop me from visiting Morocco. Not so long ago there was a bomb in Casa, it didn't really have any impact on tourism. Like Skip i have also eaten in the Argana. What I find amazing is that this was an Al Qaeda point of attack. The first time I went there with my friends from Marrakech told me that the owner provides free washing facilities for the poor and also doesn't sell products by large multinationals eg cocacola.

I was in Morocco last in January. I plan on going in October. This incident isn't going to stop me travelling to one of the most wonderful places on the planet.

What could lead a person to do this sort of thing?
I couldn't imagine ever killing 15 innocent people!
