Just wondering about this, in Toronto, there are public transit options which go by the honour system, as in, your ticket may or may not be checked. It depends on the situation but essentially you can choose not to pay in which case only if you are caught not paying will you be fined.

Now in most cases, like the train, it's hard to get away if a ticket official is checking tickets during a good gap of movement.

The obvious loophole is if you're on a train you can try to hide in the washroom while tickets are being checked, on a bus what ticket officials often do is get on the bus, one in the front door and one in the back, and though you can try your luck by running out the door at that time, you may be chased and caught.

Now, when you are caught, you are asked for identification, if you have none on you, the officer will ask you and you can lie but in most cases the officer can radio in your information to be checked.

My solution to this is to get a fake I.D, namely a drivers license that has an address.

I can therefore use several options of public transit without ever buying a ticket, in the case tickets are checked, which from my long experience is about 1 in 5 at best and 1 in 10 at worst, I can hand out my fake I.D. and get a fine I will never be held accountable for.

Of course the pitfalls of this are are follows:

After not paying your fine, you will get mail on that address after about 2-3 months, if the address is an actual house, the owner may call in the post office and they will make note of it.

I'd guess that after being issued 3 or more fines that information would be red-flagged by a government authority, in which case a file would be opened up.

Details such as what time the fine was issued and on what route.

Understanding some basic knowledge of the law system, you could get away with this if you got a new fake I.D. every year, with a new name and a new address.

Other such instances would be if you tried to steal food at a major chain market, considering the self checkouts and their many flaws it's already easy, with a fake I.D. in hand you could keep calm if you were ever apprehended by store officials.

I'm not seriously thinking of doing this because of the massive moral dilemmas but food for thought it'd be a way to commit crimes without getting punished for them.

I think the OP is suggesting stealing someones identity.. like a fake ID of someone elses real info so that they have to foot the bill and the OP does not.. if I ever got a fine in the mail because of someone as stupid, ignorant and worthless as the OP is.. you'd best be damn sure I would find you and wring your fucking neck so bad that you won't be riding a bus that doesn't have a wheelchair ramp, that's for fucking sure

...except that in Canada presenting false identification to a peace officer is a much more serious crime. Seems like an awfully big risk to take to avoid buying a 2 dollar sky-train ticket.

Why would someone even think it's a good idea to steal someones identity or lie to someone over something to miniscule.. just pay two fucking dollars and get over it

Attacking the action is acceptable but not the person. please refrain from launching personal attacks. It's probably best just to assume that the OP isn't actually planning to do this and is just asking a question that might provoke an interesting discussion. Many things cross my mind that while I wouldn't actually ever act on them I might be tempted to post a discussion about them to see how people in general respond.

I think the response thread might give some idea of how a bureaucracy might work in ways that might help regular "law abiding" citizens who might find themselves on the business end of ID theft...

and I don't think police would just "make a note of it" as the unintended recipient of the fine might well find him/herself under some unwelcome police scrutiny before the legal system writes them off as the potential victim of an identity theft who just happens to live at the address furnished by someone who was nabbed by the po-po- and not the perpetrator of the act that instigated the fine or summons.

Why would you want to go around committing petty crimes? That is a really stupid reason to get yourself a criminal record.

Some day, when you are a grown up, you may want to volunteer on a school trip with your kid. The problem is, nowadays you need a CPIC to do that.

Or to get a real job, they may do a background check on you.

You might just regret doing stupid shit for kicks.

Maybe it's possible to get away with, but I don't think it'd be worth the risk. (As in, the overall average expected value is against you.) You'd be looking at massive fines/possible jail time for the fake IDs if caught, which almost certainly is much worse than the sum of all the fares you will have beaten.
