Lady Gaga - live

On Monday night, I saw Lady Gaga live at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. I was expecting a spectacular visual show, and I was not disappointed. I don't have a lot to compare it to since I'm not a big pop music fan, but I know quality when I see it. The choreography, costumes, sets, and visual effects were everything you could want from a high-budget show. She is a reasonably good dancer, and her backup dancers were outstanding.

I had seen enough of her performances on TV, YouTube, etc. to know more or less what to expect from the musical numbers, but I didn't know what comments she might make to the audience. It was all extremely vulgar, in a playful and positive way. ("Atlanta, do you wanna fuck me?") She also spoke passionately about the importance of respecting the rights of minority social groups such as LGBT, and the importance of fighting for your own right to be different from the majority.

That message isn't significantly different from what we talk about here at HF. Her look is obviously very different from that of a "standard" hippie, but she is one of us whenever she tells "polite" society with its endless rules and expectations to go fuck itself.

Elton John was in the audience, front left. He has a home in the northern part of town (Buckhead).

The Fox Theater is a beautiful venue, but the pop/rock groups that perform there tend to use way too much power, using their coliseum sound systems in a building that only seats 4000. I put my earplugs in tight and got as much sound as I wanted. Those who went without plugs left the building unable to hear anything besides a constant ringing that surely lasted well into the next day. I'm guessing they got 140dB or more (actually my boyfriend's estimate).

Nearing the end of a 2-hour performance (18 songs) without a break lasting longer than 3 minutes, the cold, dry air was starting to take a toll on Lady Gaga's voice. Being a true professional, she slacked off a bit on a couple of vocals to save the last bit of her voice for the finale. She closed with Bad Romance, and nailed it. Every note was perfect.

She won me over. I'm a Little Monster now. ;)

Just a heads up: You are not allowed to advertise on the HF. I think you know that, though.

She had a different opening act when I saw her last December. I'm glad you enjoyed the show! :)

Her next CD comes out next month, so I guess her show will be changing again, to include some of the new songs. Time to start looking for tickets! One thing is for sure - I'll never get to see her in a 4000-seat auditorium again - unless she does an "oldies" tour when she's a middle-aged woman. :D

Lady Gag Gag can fall off the Earth.
In other words, I don't like her at all.

If you get a chance to see the Monsters Ball at Madison Square Garden that was video taped recently for HBO, you will see why she doesn't need a bunch of new hit songs every year to be a great concert draw. Live performance is what she's all about. She was the hottest ticket in America when I saw her more than a year ago, and her show has continued to improve. :)

I caught that Monsters Ball special. She is definitely an entertainer; people would rather see her perform than to watch her sing. I think this tour is supposed to be setting some records.

Maybe if she changed her name, I might decide to give her a listen, maybe. But how can anyone take someone seriously who calls herself Lady Gaga. Just reminds me of a baby saying goo goo ga ga.

She's the only "musician" of her type I listen to, and I would love to see her live. I despise most of her type and her predecessors.

That is, the type with computer-written music and auto-tune. But shit, her stuff's catchy and her messages are alright, I like her, despite her kind of creepy chest and possible penis :2thumbsup:

Ha! I dig her as well. She's actually writes her songs, so at least she has the talent to back up her antics.

this is my only problem with lady gaga. i thought she was a musician first and foremost.

i don't actually mind her music, so i am not criticising your taste - merely pointing out and oddity.

    ^^i've noticed that too.
her performance and songwriting go together just as equally tho. she isnt specifically a singer, and not specifically a visual performer, she's a sensationalist.
i haven't put the two together until watching her HBO concert.

btw anyone have opinions on her 4, 5 new songs on the new album?
Hair was released today, and i dont like it in one bit.

That was my initial reaction too. I still don't think it's a great stage name, but Stefani doesn't really fit her either. I don't know... Mama Monster may be the most descriptive! :D Yes, she talks about that on stage. If all her fans are little monsters, she has to be Mama.

To really get Gaga, you have to get her dry sense of humor.

She got the idea for her stage name from a Queen hit, Radio Ga Ga. I'm not a huge fan of Queen, especially that particular song. She is a fan, obviously, but I noted that during the set changeover after the opening act in Atlanta, the only music she selected for the CD player was Michael Jackson's greatest hits. Perfect fit.

AutoTune? She doesn't use it much at all.

Has there been a true superstar in the realm of intricate, synthesizer-dominated dance music since ABBA broke up? I can't think of one. I don't want to count Madonna because her hits were more diverse.

Being a great visual artist doesn't mean that you suck at everything else. Gaga has a strong voice that holds up well through a 2-hour set, and a lot of dance clubs still play tracks from her first CD. Check the credits on her CDs, and you will find that she does most of her own synthesizer work in the studio. Not an easy job with this type of music. Without a doubt, she is a real musician.

So far, Hair is my favorite among the new ones. It's been a long time since she released anything with this much dance potential. I was hoping that there would be at least a few new tracks that go back to her musical roots. I often use a mixed CD of her fast, hard-driving, high-energy material for my workouts. Since 2008, I have added only Bad Romance and Dance In The Dark to my mix. Hair will definitely make the cut.

As for the others, I'm not impressed with Born This Way because it isn't very original musically, and the Judas song is not an original concept - too Madonna for me, and a bit cheesy in its execution. Edge of Glory gets released for radio airplay today. I've only heard it once, so I'm still forming my opinion of it. It's definitely creative and original. I almost forgot to mention You and I because she's been performing it for so long that I forgot it had never been on a CD. It's fine for what it is - a simple piano ballad, like Speechless, which exposes her vocal talent in a very natural and organic way.

You know, we can hear all of the new CD in 6 days - 17 tracks in all. :) I'll bet she has been very busy rehearsing choreography for all that new material. More great shows to come!

And you can bet that she will continue to stand up for the rights and dignity of everyone who has ever been mistreated for being different; for refusing to conform to superficial and narrow-minded mainstream social expectations, for whatever reason. As long as she makes this a central theme of her life and career, she will have my support and love - no matter what else she does.

If you saw the season finale of Saturday Night Live, you saw not only three great live musical numbers from Gaga, but also her first attempt at sketch comedy on TV, working with Justin Timberlake. I knew that she had studied drama at the college level, so it was no surprise to me that this experience combines seamlessly with her over-the-top sense of humor to make her a natural for dark, dry, edgy comedy. She nailed it. I'm predicting that within a year, she'll be guest-hosting SNL.

Near the end of "Born This Way" she turned up pregnant, and the song ended as she was about to give "birth". I can visualize her on the phone right now, asking her production associates how they can take this concept to the next level. "Can you call the motherfuckers at Disney today and ask if they can build us a robot or puppet or something? We need a little baby monster who can fucking dance."
    :smilielol5:

Tomorrow morning, I'll be standing at the front door when the local record store opens, to be the first one in line to buy the new CD. :)
