If you suddenly couldn't handle the rat race anymore, and really decided you were taking off to live completely free, no bills, no house to take care of just go to the middle of nowhere, where would that be for you? I'm just curious, because I overheard some guys asking each other the same thing! :sunny:

Arizona no doubt. Plenty of land that you can live on for free legally with no hassle from man. Mother nature can be severe at times but you can learn to cope with that.

    Seriously.. AZ man

Depending on whether or not I'm able to handle the temperatures, the mountains in southwest Canada, in the middle zone between Vancouver & Calgary (take a look at that area (British Columbia) in Panoramio sometime...). If not, then New Mexico or Arizona... Either area, it would no doubt be best to not do it alone, at least be living cooperatively with 1 other individual.

AZ is dry mostly as it is desert but you can adjust to that. It's got a huge swing in temperature as there are mountains. I'm not sure it would be in your best interest to stay there year round? May folks vacate for the summer, heading to Colorado or the Pacific Northwest. Winters are nice in some areas but cold and snow in others. It's a very diverse state.

The big draw is all the BLM land that you can legally stay on. There is a lot of beauty in the desert. Amazing sunsets, quite a bit of wildlife too.

having spent most of my life in new england, i would tend to gravitate to that part of the country. i've been to maine and would have to agree--that would (for me) be the first place i'd like to try.

One of the Discovery islands in BC. Maybe Nootka or Lasqueti....They're incredibly beautiful and isolated.

    Alaska panhandle coast.
Why? Salmon and halibut fishing, blacktailed deer to hunt, big bears & not to cold.

Everything is audacious here. The sunlight nearly overwhelms me as it ricochets off the sea, the white sand, the flipping silver fish bursting from waves. It's all so decadent: fruit on every bush, ornate orchids, bougainvilleas that tumble and flow. Colors that don't exist elsewhere: fuchsia, emerald, beryl. Even lizards sizzle with brash oranges, shocking jades. Some flies are the size of a half dollar, with sprawling legs, bulging eyes. The reel zings.

An unpopulated 60 sq. mile island in some tropical region rich in natural resources like food, bamboo, copper and volcanic iron (natural magnets and a source of iron ore.

Sorry, always gotta think of everything in Gilligans Island terms...

Oh and it must have coconuts and fig palms. :D

That is a beautiful spot. There are still some wild areas with very few people.
