An International commission has issued a report calling for the end of the War on Drugs because it cannot be "won." They request the legalization of marijuana and other drugs to help fight the crime syndicates that are profiting from the illegality. Isn't it funny how all these retired public officials come out for legalization AFTER their terms in office, when they could've done something about it themselves while in office? I guess they're not getting their payoffs from the DEA anymore. Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/01/drug-war-has-failed-report_n_870096.html
While more steam to the cause is always good. It just feels like another body that does not have enough power to make it happen, so we are in the same status that we were before, trying to get those in power to not be so stupid, and start listening to those that they are supposedly supposed to be working for.
That's something that always pisses me off. It's like they try to do a little bit of good later, when they have no real weight to throw around. Though realistically any one person in any group, administration, etc. doesn't have much weight either, their hands are pretty well tied if those around them don't share the same goals and ideals.
Well- assuming that they've won office in part because corporate interests have funded a campaign that the pay from a full term wouldn't be able to fund and those deep pockets are likely interested in keeping the drug war going I don't see how this is going to change any time soon. If we want to effect any real political justice, then we need to stop recognizing corporations as individuals with rights to speech and ability to fund political candidates' runs for office because the deep corporate pockets enable them to amplify their voice to drown out ours- they can mass manipulate opinion by funding junk science and saturation media disinformation campaigns that most people will automatically assume to be credible. Also- the war on drugs needs to be made un-profitable. Criminalizing and warehousing people in the penal system accompanies a contrived justification to confiscate their property. It also permits data to be compiled and disseminated that helps ambitious police chiefs, DAs, and politicians appear "tough on crime" which resonates very well with a population that is conditioned to be fearful and helpless against imaginary perils that the press and mass media help to contrive..
I wouldn't get my hopes up about this, but great post, nonetheless. hah Right. The way things are looking right now, the U.S. federal government would be one of the very last to legalize, if at all. They were even sending threats to medicinal states and states considering going medical some while back. Hope they take the opportunity to look into psychedelics as well, since this encompasses the entire drug war.
Yay! I'm going to Greece later this year, so maybe the prime minister will legalize it by then! (Fat chance, I know).
Prohibition of Drugs My definition: The deliberate spreading of misconceptions, lies and slander using tax payer money in order to get enough support in order to regulate the industries and minds of the people being lied to. How easily the field of grass bends to the wind... Could it be changing directions?
This article is good news. You have no idea how pleased I was to see the CNN reporter standing in front of a back drop that says "War on Drugs: Failure". Makes me feel good. Its not a war on drugs, its a war on personal preference and choice. Its a pathetic endeavor that will never be won. Ever. Yet they POUR tax dollars into it, not to mention all of the corruption that has revealed itself since the first years of the war. The funniest part of the war on drugs has to be Marijuana especially. Only in America would the #1 cash crop be illegal to grow and possess. 36 billion dollars in revenue is the estimated figure. Once we stop declaring war on things, and learn to live with what doesn't hurt others...we may just have a chance for long term success in the world.
You mean they actually gave this story coverage on CNN? All we got on the BBC was about the queen's fucking jubilee next year, and about how we should all have a street party... with tea and cakes no doubt (not laced with anything) 5 seconds is what they gave it on the news yesterday. It wasn't even discussed on question time. It never is! It's not an important issue to most people. Cameron hinted at legalising marijuana a few years back when he was campaigning to get elected, but now that he is in power... And Charles Clarke the former home secretary called for decriminalisation last year AFTER he was voted out of power AND he stated that the reason he did not say anything while he was in power was for fear of the public backlash it would cause... like when Prof. Nutt spoke out and was instantly sacked.. Spineless bastards the lot of them.
I disagree. I think it's an important issue to many people. As an example about 50% of the people of the United States feel that cannabis should be legalized. Who it is not an important issue for is the shareholders of corporations and government. The people who want us to go out and get good educations, fall in line, get good jobs all so that we can line their pockets for as long as we live like the cash cows we really are. They have absolutely zero interest in the legalization of a drug that might make people think freely. It isn't so much that news channels don't want to cover it, it's just that they don't out of fear that they might lose their job. More likely they're actually told not to by someone high up the ladder who was told by said shareholders they don't want the story covered on their news channel. The media is sold, bought, and paid for. They're not in the business of covering stories they think people would be interested in. They're in the business of telling people things they want the public to be interested in.
So why didn't anyone mention it on question time last night, or indeed ever? All people care about is the economy and jobs and fucking immigration. It bores me to death. No-one really takes the idea of it being legalised because we have become brainwashed into believing it can never happen. I know that a lot of people do care though Exactly. Cunts.
Yes, I was surprised as well. I agree on some level that it lacks importance to a lot of people. But that's just it. Even IF that's a true statement, its a positive for people in the drug community. 20-30 years ago everyone of them were personal crusaders, people who had a hatred with drugs that almost rivaled the religious hatred some people have/had for each other. Now a vast majority either wants them legalized or doesn't give a shit either way. The rest of them are just having a hard time dealing with the fact that their government told them something that was untrue. They also seem to have no problem with the trillions that have been spent. It might as well have been literally flushed down a toilet. We incarcerate 5 times more citizens than any other country in the world at a cost of tens of billions a year. The war on drugs isn't just a failure. It draws a very significant line that any intelligent/receptive person should pay attention too. That line reads "Even the most powerful country in the world is powerless against drugs and their appeal. No matter how morally wrong it is to you, they will be used for as long as there are minds to receive their benefits" The war on drugs is no different than the war on aids, the war on cancer, or even the war on terrorism (if I may be so bold). The only thing it does efficiently is flush money that we could be using to repair our infrastructure down a toilet. Not only is the war on drugs a complete failure...the tighter they squeeze those in charge of supplying the drugs, the more money those men make. Its a pointless mission to be sure, but it actually makes things worse.
Ya know, this has been going on for 40 years now. I'm and old hippie who suggested 40 years ago that if everyone who smoked would just take any of their leftover seeds and when they go for a drive anywhere, throw them out of the car window each time, nobody could stop us. Ever. A million hippies times 12 months in a year worth of lids times 40 years resulting in only 5 plants per throw, equals ten billion four hundred million plants. 10,400,000,000. Do the math. If only 1 of the 5 plants from each monthly throw from all of the 1 million hippies dropped only 35 seeds that grew and seeded, how much more would that add over 12 months and over the 40 years. Or 480 months. Go for it. But alas, ever body just laughed at me when I was 20. If they had all only listened to me the whole country would be up to they're ass in weeds right now.
Yeah, it's a pretty standard cycle.... through the cabnets of the administrations that STARTED the war on drugs, off the payroll, denounce it as the horible idea that it is, ignored by those now on the payroll.
Your statements are cool and all but ask yourselves why pot wasn't legalized years ago? Because the people who care, hippies and pot smoker, are apathetic, and individualistic, and don't care to organize onto a group. Truth. While the anti group, political party, is extremely organized, very dedicated, and very united. Also Truth. So, I ask you, is it any wonder?
Achieving human rights seems to be a slow process in most cases, e.g., ending slavery, decreasing racism, increasing women's rights, decreasing sexual prejudice, so on and so forth. While things remain to be done in these areas, they are better and the article you posted is a part of - another step forward - in achieving our fundamental human right to change our consciousness. I'm really glad to see it. Thanks for posting.
Just the most prominent example of a Gvmt. agency out to protect its turf, its jobs & pensions and funding. With the assistance of a compleasant media, orchristrate a "crisis" that will require a fully funded gvmt orginization to rescue or to control a dangerous situation. People have been unacustomed to question cost up to this time. Now that the Gvmt is flat broke, some may begin questioning costs. The compleasant media will continue broadcasting humanitarian crissis while ignoring the fisc.
