This is an issue that has bugged me for some time. There is the idea that a person should be free and live life as they please, on the other hand, many actions have consequences that can bog us down. Self-indulgence, for example, can ruin our heath, our wallets, and our relationships when it gets out of control. Conversely, frugality and self-restraint can build resources over time, and can lead to many positive relationships. A good day's work, in conjunction with frugality, quickly builds financial resources. Although hippies generally dislike wealth, a few thousand dollars could legitimately purchase enough land for self-sufficient living. If a loan is taken out, then the hopeful must have a steady source of income, long enough to pay off the land. Criminal or destructive activity could terminate that dream, and holding a job at any rate means self-control. Working a garden is no easier. Conservative morals are often attacked as being overbearing and oppressive. In the hands of some, rules can be oppressive, but at the same time these virtues exist for entirely practical reasons. In the modern age of cheap wealth, waste is not so much of a problem, and in fact the economy thrives off it. In times gone by, both food and staple amenities were made by hand, and so were not cheap. Wasteful behavior was very destructive, and so there were rules against gluttony and excess. When a scarce resource is consumed, it becomes more expensive, so being a porker affected everyone. Society in general is no longer poor, but some people are, so it is especially important for them not to do stupid things. It is unfortunate that the wealthy can indulge, but a person who falls into debt simply becomes more enslaved to the system. A person who becomes pregnant is denied a measure of freedom, and there is a moral argument against killing a fetus. Also with sex, running through too many relationships can lead to emotional complexity, while a single love never incurs heartbreak. The basic argument of conservatism is that self-restraint lends itself to wealth and avoids emotional agony, thus leading to a more fulfilling existence. It is then, in my opinion, a fact that morality is cyclical, because moderate living promotes individual freedom. This does not mean that a person must bind themselves utterly to a demanding organization, but be mindful to the consequences of their actions. Hippies have always believed in frugality, and when they indulged, sought creative ways to accommodate their lifestyle. Many ancient reformers, including Jesus himself, carried very little, and depended on a simple virtue to get them through the physical challenges of a traveling mission. Hippies choose to live free, and often accept the consequence of poverty that results. They make do by dumpster-diving, salvaging items off the side of the road, and even selling handcrafted items at fairs. This is the reality of any lifestyle: A person must think through the full consequences, and find ways to overcome obstacles, because some objectives are their own hurdles. Clearly, a person must observe some form of virtue to get the job done. *It is hard to travel without money, but having a job means staying put. *Free love is free until someone falls pregnant, but the task of raising a child might be overwhelming to a single mother. The group must raise children as a communal activity, but are the guys so committed to the group. *Getting high means impairing judgement and the ability to perform constructive tasks. *Eating natural means forfeiting snack food. *Eating cheap means forfeiting more attractive food. *Self-sufficient living means hard work, even with expert know-how. *Living communally means learning to negotiate and withstand human drama.
Yeah, Life's a fuc_ing bit_h, isn't it? So, don't have sex and don't eat snack food. Just leaves more for us. "Conservative morals are often attacked as being overbearing and oppressive." That's because they are overbearing and oppressive. I think that you are confusing the word "conservative" here. Conserving food, conserving nature, and conserving other things has absolutely nothing to do with Conservative politics and or Conservative morals. These are two totally different things. Conservative politics and or Conservative morals means keeping everything the same forever (the Status Quo. Change? Never.) and for some it means from the time of Christ. Rules. Lots. Rules and Freedom are opposites like up and down are. In the terms of Conservative politics and or Conservative morals, the opposite would be Progressive politics and or Progressive morals. Progressives are allowed the use 4G and Cloud. Conservatives use Clubs and flint. Conservative is the 1950s, Progressive is the future. I guess that you could try and do both, but why bother? Freedom is a whole different subject and can be killed by either. Freedom is no one controlling you with any rules. Back when, hippies were about do anything that you want to, as long as you don't hurt anybody. Hope you understand. Good Luck. Lovingly, Kenny
