basically you just gotta be adventurous and click on hidden related videos on youtube, and like you said, you can come on here and look through what people have posted. Pandora radio is good for finding lesser known shit that is similar to whatever you type in to it. GOogle "top ten obscure whatever".

    sometimes it takes some digging.

Movies, tv shows, recommendations from other people; looking up an artist if I hear a song I like by them

I discover amazing new music by attending music festivals, or simply by looking up artists from music festival line-ups.

I'm kind of old-school. I hit the pubs when local bands are playing

I sometimes end up jazzed about a band that *nobody* has heard of.

Example: one of the most raw, dirty, painful bands I've seen was this group of young townies in Dekalb, Illinois in 2007... Don't know if they are still together and they're youtube videos don't do them justice, but look up "Astral Guard" if you want to see the band I'm referring to
I don't much get into the loop when it comes to more mainstream music

If you like a certain type of artist, on some websites, some suggestions of other artists/bands you may like appear and you can try them out. Or typing random names on people into Google and see what you can find. Or maybe sometimes recommended by other people.

find blogspots, there are tons of it, and they're all interconnected. I started by downloading lots of albums from weedtemple and carried on with other blogspots. Also, when I really like an artist, I download most of his albums. And, yeah youtube's linked videos too, and friend's music

On youtube. For example let's say you really like led zeppelin and you want to listen to stairway to heaven. Usually there are similar bands in the menu bar (and shitty promoted ones as well). It's just a game of fishing out the good from the bad.
Also friends pass on their good tunes. Surfing the net.

Whoa now! One does not find good music, good music finds you as which can only be judge by the ear of the beholder.

Tho I would suggest pandora and youtube.

film soundtracks, myspace search and actually remembering support bands at concerts. there's likely loads of good stuff people hear on a night out seeing their favourite group, and then forget about.
