I was in that show, and actually really dug the tunes. The movie's pretty sweet, even if I can't get over how much Ted Neely looks like Billy Ray Cyrus in it - kind of distracting.

But the "Heaven on Their Minds" from the original concept recording that you posted is my favorite version of that song. I also love his "Judas' Death". His voice was far more interesting than the Judas in the film, imo. Neely was a better Jesus than Gillan, though.

Also - if you see "Simon Zealot" in the movie, the choreography is EXACTLY what we used in the stage adaptation. Strangely, that choreography works with so many songs perfectly. "Holding Out For a Hero" it works eerily good.

Well I can honestly say I don't pay attention to musicals at all either, but I knew this one happily. It's set in 33 A.D. but it has an amazing 70's vibe over it

I never saw it live, but it's always struck me as mere pretentious hippie crap. It doesn't do justice to the real gospel of Jesus Christ. It's as bogus as Mel Gibson's psychodrama, IMO.

The real Jesus doesn't appear in movies. He's a life-giving Spirit, available for us to enjoy and participate in by calling on Him, by calling upon His name.

The "hippie Jesus" did have some attraction to me, early on. I joined a communal Jesus cult because of it. That kind of crap destroys people's lives, and sets them in the wrong direction. Look what it did to River Phoenix.

People need to know the real Jesus, not some hippie pretender.

the "real" Jesus? and who or what might that be? i mean, there isn't any actual historical evidense indicating that a "real" Jesus even existed. (and considering how anal the Romans were about record keeping you'd think there'd be something/anything about them executing some Hebrew messiah. and shouldn't there be mountains of material written by Jesus' contemporaries concerning a miraculous guy who could walk on water, heal lepers and raise the dead?) and don't hand me Josephus please. he's already been discredited by most Biblical scholars, including Christian ones. the New Testament (written from oral stories/hearsay some 30-100 years after the purported death of Jesus) and assorted myths and legends doesn't a "real" Jesus make. your Jesus isn't any more or less real or valid than that of anyOne else, hippy version or otherwise.

if you don't like Jesus Christ Super Star that's fine. we all have different tastes in entertainment but to go off on a religious morality rant over JC Super Star is pretty damn silly.

I agree, it's a musical for pete's sake. Also, even if you look objective to the biblical Jesus he has some hippie tendencies (love your neighbour, turn the other cheek etc. etc.). Not that I care, I don't perceive him to be a hippie of course. Any way, people can take it as seriously as they want but movies don't have to do justice to any gospel. I think this was a fairly reasonable depiction though. Have you watched Life of Brian for instance? :D

Seeing it, LIVE, at the moment in time, was IMO the mood of the time and depicted the feeling of youthful spirit - what it may have become now = ????
Hippie crap? - maybe you had to be there (?)
Jesus? I think that to think all stories attributed to one person is something of a ...stretch - Faith however, well that's another story
    ... or more :)

It's certainly dated, but that's even more the case with the bible itself so I don't see the problem :p

i, personally, liked the movie and still do. i like the minimalist approach to props and scenery and the overall organic vibe of it.

and it was the first time i ever saw Judas cut any slack.

I was there. I was one of the original "hippies" of West Los Angeles, graduated high school in '68, smoked a lot of pot, took a lot of acid, mescaline, etc. etc.

I saw Janis, and Jimi, and was friends with one of the original members of Fleetwood Mac, when they were a blues band. He and I both joined a hippie Jesus communal cult. I left after two years. He's still associated with them.

I went through a Zen stage, a Yoga stage, and finally turned to Jesus, at a point in my life where I needed a Savior. I found one in Him. I found Him to be real, and still do.

I'm not what you might call a "Christian", except regarding my faith in and enjoyment of Christ. I dislike what passes for "Christianity", and shun so-called "Christian" politics and activity.

To me, it's either real, or it's not. Maybe you have nostalgia for JCSuperstar. I don't. I found it incredibly pretentious, and made Jesus out to be just some hippie.

    So sue me.

I was there. It's not Halloween anymore, children.

"I was there. It's not Halloween anymore, children."

    lol talk about pretentious.

i don't give a shit if you were a Jesus Freak. i don't give a shit if you took a religious tour. i don't give a shit if you "where there". and i don't give a shit if you take offense at the hippy version of Jesus. sound like personal problems to me.

it's just a frigging movie and i like it.
