So I've been seeing a pain management doctor for what he called a thoracic scapular strain. Whatever. I basically I have a bunch of trigger points in my back that fucking suck. He's injected them a few times and that's helped a bit and he's also sent me to physical therapy. Now what I want is to get some opiates to deal with the pain while I'm undergoing treatment but I made the mistake of telling him that I had gone to drug rehab. So my question is does anyone know what I should tell him to convince him to prescribe opiates, preferably an extended release formulation so I can take as few pills as possible? Also, in terms of tolerance, can I still get pain relief even if I'm not actually euphoric? Or can you not have one without the other? Thanks in advance.
Well it seems obvious that the drug rehab comment more than likely caused him to bypass a regiment of pain meds but I dont know how you described your pain to the Dr. But once you opened the drug rehab can, most Drs would be reluctant to start you off on narcotics without trying non narcotic methods. When you mentioned drug rehab, what was your DOC that cause you to go to rehab?
I would try to see if he would give you opioids. If not, go somewhere else and don't mention the drug rehab. Don't doctor shop, though: That is, don't get an opioid script from the first doctor AND get another one from someone else. It is very possible to achieve pain relief without being doped up all day. That is what a pain management doctor is skilled at doing (if they know what they are doing, of course!) Best of luck. Just think smart and evaluate your situation.
I'm hoping I can just stick with this doctor because my hometown is relatively small and options are limited. I've read some articles about pain management still be achieved in people with addictive disorders so that's what I'm gunning for. I mean getting high is great and all but that's not my aim nor do I want to be stuck taking opiates the rest of my life. I really just want to get some reprieve from the pain while I go through physical therapy. As for my DOC at rehab, it was mainly alcohol and cocaine. The only opiates I had used before that was hydrocodone and rarely oxycodone.
Wel since your DOC from rehab wasnt opiates, did you mention to him what it was?? Just be straight up with him and tell him that you are in pain and what hes doing isnt working.
Again I felt the need to be honest and there was a form I filled out that listed all the drugs I'd at the very least tried so it's definitely an uphill battle. He originally told me that I will just have to tough it out but I don't really think I can do that anymore (it's already been two years). So I guess I'm just gonna do my best to get across to him precisely how much pain I'm in and hope for the best. Next Tuesday will be the moment of truth. On related note, has anyone had any experience with opioid induced hyperalgsia? My dad (a doctor) was telling me that it was a common occurrence while other sources Ive read imply that it actually only occurs in about 10% of the population. Thoughts?
