President Barack Obama will launch an initiative on Friday to develop new manufacturing jobs by teaming government up with companies and universities to invest more than $500 million in advanced technologies.
I want to draw your attention to the last line that says, " federal departmental budgets to invest with industry some $300 million to jump-start domestic manufacturing capabilities seen as critical to U.S. national security."

I have never claimed that technology is evil because in fact it's self-evident that it's amoral. (def. amoral : http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/amoral) And this is what makes it dangerous.

Tokugawa Ieyasu (founder of the first shogun) sums up the problem of anyone or anything lacking morality.

"That which is amoral serves no one and nothing. Save for that which can control it. And those that can control what is amoral are always the most violent and corrupt in a society. Therefore when given the choice between the most wicked and that which is amoral. Always destory or kill those things that demonstrate neither morality nor immorality. Even if doing so means you must sacrafice all your wealth, family and even your own life."

Keep it in mind that our government and big business do nothing that doesn't ultimately benefit themself. It may sound great that they're making an investure in our economy. But remember that our government, by it's own admission, isn't doing this for our benefit. It's doing it in the interest of "National Security." Therefore don't believe for a single second that our government will have second thoughts about using it against its citizens.

As for the young members of this forum that have grown up with the "technology will solve all problems" mantra,

Don't forget that you've never known a moment in your life without having some sort of electronic device at arm's reach. And for those addicted to it, it can be just as strong a motivator as crack is to a junkie looking for his fix.

Learn to do things for yourself before you reach for the technological assistance. Because dependancy on anything or anyone is a weakness.

Grapes are just like Broccoli to Barrack Obama, the ideal third senator's subject to carrots and onions. What the heck is there in this android software gismo stuff? Ipad2 and the much heralded upload of downloading capacities. The hardware can't be for free out there in heaven. If the broccoli is for good taste and tie stir.

So THAT'S where all the newly printed money will go! "We're gonna make you poorer and build more weapons" is about the jist of it.

One major point: The more you invest in technology, especially the robotics, the more capable machines become at doing the jobs that humans do, requiring no pay and working round the clock. So more job losses! I can't believe people fell for this whole Obama thing in the first place!

Its an obviously poll conscious maneuver. He has something else up his sleeve, it's a hunch of mine anyway. A finale so to speak. A last ditch political stint to get the voting majority on his side. Then he will speak, and you will see the same kind of passion he had in the weeks approaching the election of 2008. The line "..But I'm not done" will be uttered at LEAST once.

The sad part is that people are likely to fall for it. Unless the republicans gain some REAL momentum in the coming year.

Technology doesn't make anyone's life better. Contrary to the ilusion of owning an IPad, it doesn't improve the quality of life.

You've given a great example of one problem. Making the human workforce obsolete by use of robotic technology. Let's face it, a robot doesn't need a union, never has a family and can work 24/7 Make this problem worse, many are developing highly intelligent robots that can maintain and even build other robots.

What improves the quality of life and the standard of living is simple mechanics. A good example is a simple hand made water pump in a village. And in this nation it was the washing machine.

Plus simple mechanical machines have an inherent morality. By virtue that it requires a mesure of craftsmanship to construct something mechanical. They machines tend to serve communities and families. They're in fact very social. Whereas technology is very antisocial.

A good example is my record player versus an Ipod. When I sit on my old back deck playing records on my old portable record player. Everyone from the mailman to the children riding bikes will sit down and spend some time with me.

In short there is absolutely nothing that we actually need that technology can give us.

I wasn't speaking in favor of either side really. I see now that it would be easy to figure it that way by reading it again. I'm not HOPING that the republicans gain momentum.

I'm just fine with Obama, he's done better than bush did in some areas. I'm just a bit critical of some of his 'strategies' and his please all attitude. Especially when there are some repub's that will dislike anything he puts forth no matter how powerful his speeches are, or how much progress he makes. The only thing that puts him in jeopardy is anyone from the republican party gaining momentum.

I do probably deserve some, its been awhile...haha.

Why can't these great new technologies raise capital in the stock market, the old fashion way.

Why is our Gvmt. in the business of picking winners and losers in the market?

Are we so flush that we can throw 500M at these start-ups?

I say Gvmt. is not qualified to underwrite risk in new tech. Anybody from California ever heard of CALPERS and Stuyvesant Town?

Bah, technology. As ironic as it is to say it on an internet forum, it does more bad than good. It just gets us more hooked to the system.

"If everyone demanded peace instead of another television set, then there'd be peace." - John Lennon

And fuck Obama, the damned hypocrite. Vote Green!

I want us to colonize space.

I only wish we could invent the most mind-blowing technologies, but NOT have them infilterate every aspect of our everyday lives.
