About a month ago now I fractured my hip and femur falling off a 3 story apartment building. I had surgery that day.. they put rod down my femur and another one going into my hip with a bunch of screws. Anyways, I was in the hospital for 11 days and on my last days there they were giving me 6mg dilaudids. After I was released from hospital my next script was 4mg dil. It last me maybe 5 days then they put me to 2mg, and then now 1mg. I understand it is important to ween me off these types of pills but I cannot tolerate this pain. I am going to see my family doctor tomorrow (I was getting my script before from my surgeon). I am hoping he can increase the dosage or else possibly switch me to oxys. I heard they work better? What do I tell my doctor tomorrow when I go see him? I am worried he will not increase my dosage.. Should I ask him about oxys as well? This is sort of off topic now, but do you think I will have long term pain with the type of injury I have sustained? I realize you guys aren't doctors but maybe someone has a similar story.
First off, DO NOT ask your Dr about a specific DOSE or DRUG. Thats a big red flag. In your condition, all you should have to do is say IT ISNT WORKING, IM STILL IN LOTS OF PAIN, that statement right there should get you what you want......
well family doctors are very tight with there Rx pads, I dont see him giving u more than the 1 or 2mg dilaudids, and if he did switch you to oxy, it probably wont be more than 10mg percs. I have seen my dr before and even tho he knows im a opiate tolerate person and weigh 300+ and given all of my ailments he has never given me more than 10mg percs. Now did i fall off a 3 story apartment building....NO!!! If u are looking for long term opiate treatment for your pain, u will prolly need to get a referral to see a pain management doctor, either from your family dr. or your surgeon. My surgeon did the same thing, hung me out to dry after i was to far past post surgery for him to refill my meds, but he did give me the referral to see the Pain dr. where the started me off at a decent dose and upped it every 2 weeks pending on how i felt. GOOD LUCK THOUGH, i hope u dont have to go that route, as the first appointment was hard to get, i ended up waiting like almost 5 weeks to get it, as most PM dr's are PACKED FULL, I know for the last few weeks they have had a letter up at my dr's office that they are not taking new patients.............
I would consider seeing a Pain Management doctor if your Family Doctor isn't skilled enough in dealing with such severe and unusual trama pain. In every pharmacology book I read, it says, in bold (in the opioids chapters): Under no conditions are you [the doctor] to withhold adequate pain relief to a patient (ie: opioids), even if they have a "bad" history. So, just be honest, don't go in there asking for specific things, and if the family doctor doesn't help, seek a specialist like I said.
