I just did a search for this. Found about 20 odd all within 1 mile of where I live. Have to check one of them out, just out of curiosity..

What are these things when you find them, is it in a box buried in the ground, or under a rock or what, or is each one unique?

I really like geocaching. I live down the block from a forest preserve in the 'burbs so there are quite a few in the woods around here. It's nice because it's like a treasure hunt, in the sense that you are actually looking for something. In the other sense it's good because usually the hunt takes you to a more secluded area and its nice to find a new place to relax and think. I enjoy geocaching more in the winter though because in the summer, everything tends to be more overgrown and more people are out with their children. In the winter, everything is much quieter, much less people out and about. One downside to hunting for geocaches in the winter is that if it snows before you go, you have a chance of stumbling onto someone's footsteps, which could lead you to where the cache is, kinda defeating the purpose of looking for it. Regardless, I'd say give it a go, it's enjoyable!

The caches are usually in some sort of box or thing to keep the items in it from getting wet or destroyed. I've seen everything from ammo cans to film canisters. Usually, on the website, it will tell you the size of the box. What I've also seen done is people leave riddles in the description of the cache, as to give you a hint as to what to look for. One I looked for had a rhyme that said something about a babbling brook where faeries play under trees.. Something along those lines, I'm no poet. Anyways, I ended up finding it in this little sunk down area by some tree limbs, so it created a tiny little sorta pool. It had rained so I had to stick my hand into some murky water to reach back into it, but it was there. So yes, each placement of the cache is different.
