I'm planning on getting dreads over the summer . My mom is okay with it but my dad hates them. He just knows a bunch of stereotypes. Anyway my hair is 3 1/2 but it grows about 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch a month. When I'm done growing it out it will probably be 5 to 6 inches . I want to get extensions because I hate the shrinkage that comes with dreads. If I go back to school how will ppl react? (im a dude) will they even notice? Will they call me gay? ( bare with me I have social anxiety disorder)

yeah they'll notice, and they'll probably call you gay. if you are insecure about yourself, locks are not the right style for you. they take confidence.

I know :I I want them anyway I've wanted them for a year but I'm tired of wanting them and not having them so I'm getting them anyway. I use to getting crap , I'm "different" . I'm a black vegetarian, Buddhist by choice, and sometimes I dress differently. Almost like a stereotypical hipster.

It's just an opinion, but I'd skip the extensions. Your hair will grow

    Dude.....smile :D
I've found that I was much more introverted when I didn't have dreads. Ya gotta just own it man. Dreading takes a lot of confidence but it's something that comes with time. The sooner you accept the fact that you're "different", as you put it, the sooner you can go on not caring what people think. You're in high school, right? I wouldn't worry too much, hs is a phase where everyone feels different. Finding out who you are and what kind of values/morals you believe in is the name of the game. Everyone is searching. Hold true to yourself and let the journey happen.

I will have to disagree with you slightly I was rely shy when I got my dreads, but they have give me confidence, mabe I found my confidence myself I dunno but the dreads certainly helped but I couldn't give a shit what people thought anyway but I got more positive reactions then negative and spoke to more randoms than I did before. Maybe that's just me ??? :)

You know, man, I haven't posted in this forum before, because I was gonna like, wait and take pictures of my dreads and introduce myself first and not just jump on in, but I have to, now.

If they call you gay, so what? There are worse things to be called. In fact, it's worse altogether to not do something that you want to do because you're worried about what people will think of you. Extensions won't hurt anybody, and if they make you happy, that's all that matters. I often wish that when I was younger, I'd done more stuff that I didn't do because I didn't want people to say bad things bout me. As I've gotten a little older, I realize that I took things way too seriously. You only get this one life, so you have to do what's going to make you happy. Even if it's something other people don't understand. When they say stuff, thinking they're tearing you down, they're really broadcasting their insecurities for everyone to see.

So, don't worry. If someone calls you gay, they're being homophobic and stupid anyway. You can't tell from someone's hair if they're gay or not, and if someone thinks you're gay and you're not gay, well, it's not going to make you gay, right? Do your thing, and be happy.

Also, post pictures. Because that's why I've been lurking around this forum. Pictures of awesome dreads. :D

Don't get extensions if you want to dread, just let it grow and stop messing with it. If you're worried about people talking shit extensions won't help that...

Heres a little tip tho, stop giving a fuck what other people think about yourself, because they aren't YOU. Just make sure you love yourself for who you are.

    Dreads ftw

i don't really equate being insecure with being shy or quiet.

same.. people have said im like a different person when i got locks, because im so much more confident, more smiley.

re insecure vs shy.. i think there is a difference, but not much. im shy in a group of new people, but not necessarily insecure about anything (espesh my hair)
