Hello all, I've been thinking about doing dreadlocks for a while now and a few days ago decided to take the plunge with the backcombing method. I did part of one side of my hair, which had been repeatedly dyed just about every color of the rainbow this past year (though it is now back to brown), and it worked fabulously. However, when trying to do a few on the side of my hair that's been untouched by dyes, they ended up being much more smooth and flat and just not very locky at all haha. I don't really have anything against that, as I understand there's sometimes not much you can do but wait, but compared with the other half of my head where they were very fluffy and plyable, it looked strange, so I panicked and took them out. Does anyone have advice on how to make both sides look somewhat even? Or am I just going to have to equally damage the other side haha. I'm going to try again (with the assistance of a friend thankfully) tomorrow, and was hoping to get some words of wisdom before then. Thanks!
well you could damage the other side, but I wouldn't recomend that, you could also wait until the new hair gows and cut the damaged section and then get dreads, or you could just get them and forget about it, new hair will grow and eventually the sides will look more even
I'd go for equally damaging. I had a nasty time with my hairline not dreading. So I bleached the crap out of it a month ago and it's knotting up like gangbusters.
Hahaha nice. Yeah, I'll have to think about it :/ I'll probably just give it a go as is, but maybe if it doesn't work I'll do a little maintenance...
half of my head was bleached & half wasnt (this is my old set of dreads). the bleached side had much more friction, broken bits, split ends, knots, whatever... the brown side was smoother, more loosies, longer to knot.. i personally would wait and grow out the crap side, and start with fresh hair
I remember my own hair like that. My hair was lopsided. One side of my parting was massive, the other side was flat as fuck
The thing about this hairstyle that you should understand is that its inherent nature is uncontrolable. The more your fuck with the style , otherwise known as "locking methods" and "maintenance", the further away your get from the organic natture of the style. If you want your hair to be even, uniform, or perfect, this is not the style for you. If you combed all of em out, congrats, you get to damage your hair by backcombing them again. If you are going to backcomb, only do it once and leave them alone after that. Of course, you could always just leave it alone and neglect.
