I think it's a waste of taxpayers' money to continue funding the manned space program. It's appropriate to turn it over to private industry who might make some money off it, with interesting things like orbiting hotels and gymnasiums and amusement parks.

    WATSE OF MONEY

100 BILLION,To fund war in iraq..and 7 to 10 to fund the greatest challenge man has ever known..

    It is to weep

There is 100 times the resources of earth just waiting for us to use in this solar system.
    "Waste of time?

And an aside.. we cannot have our gene pool in one basket
    It must be spread out.
This leads to diversity and change.. growth and evolution.

Or are we going to eat macdonalds forever. In an ever reducing path of resources down to on burger per family per year?

The entire space program has existed for 2 purposes.

    1) To instill hyper patriotism in America and by doing so... Give our government and military consent to be assholes towards the rest of the world.

    2) To hide in plain view our continued weaponization of space. A pursuit seen by both the pentagon and government as an essential keystone to protect the hegemony of our nation.

    As far as I'm concerned,
We should be worrying about fixing our problems here on this planet before we go exporting them across the universe.

I read that the U.S. Gov is now offering a fat pile of money to whoever can build a starship. Wants it to be ready to go within 100 years. Or maybe it was by the end of this century, I don't remember.

I think we'll be eating their exhaust when shit hits the fan on this planet.

They've been looking for inhabitable worlds for a long time now. I read one was found a few weeks ago.

I think one or two of the moons of jupiter were deemed inhabitable since they have a lot of ice on them, from which we can refine oxygen and melt into water etc.

You cant fix the problems on earth YET.. We are too stupid.. we need more resources.
WE ALL KNOW THIS.. WHY ARGUE ABOUT IT
When we own the solar system THEN we can talk starships.

If we dont leave our planet.. it. and us will die.
Did the IQ's suddenly drop when i had back turned..

Humanity will go to space, become agrarian sheep
    or become extinct.
    Take your pick

I have no desire for my bloodline to be anything less than adventurers
    I choose space

The age of aquarius indeed.. crap

Education costs lots, takes time though benefits many - It should be a duty of the State, the Government or Majesty of rule to invest in
However (and sadly) this is too often not the case
When private funding comes into play, too often greed comes into the equation and profitability overshadows the ultimate goal
Anything that has ultimately such Power, such Force can be corrupted and manipulation of such can be a disastrous thing (just ask Oppenheimer)
All things cost, all things have a price the balance is at least precarious
    - Or is that just me then
    ;)
