^^I'm in the same boat as you. I was on meds for almost two years and one day I woke up and realized I couldn't think straight and I was sick of being a zombie so I weened myself off the meds and never went on them again (with exceptions of Xanax which I took for my panic attacks on the highway).

There are other options in life than meds. Apparently people aren't getting my point here...I feel for those who have this illness. I understand the chemical imbalance and shit happening in the brain...I've been through it myself and with my mother. But I watched my mother, at her weakest lowest moment say, "hey, I'm gunna start helping myself get over this." And her depression was much much worse than most cases.

What I'm saying is that people are crying "depression" for the drugs to take them away from the reality of their lives. And doctors are so quick to throw these meds at them. My doctor tried shoving Wellbutrin down my throat the last time I saw her because I told her my father passed...she just assumed I needed meds.

Then you needed to make the distinction between a person being pro-active in their treatment striving to get better, like your mother and saying it's BS. You said she still takes some meds to maintain emotional balance, correct? That right there should indicate to you that it is biological in nature and not just psychological.

Bottom line is there is "episodic depression" such as everybody faces at times in life. It's just part of life.
There is also depression/bi-polar disease that is COMPLETELY biological in nature and completely outside of the persons control. Is it really that hard to comprehend for some people that some mental illness is exactly that, an illness the same as something like diabetes or heart disease.

It is a very big mistake to lump the two together and say it's all bullshit and they should just "pull themselves up by their bootstraps and get on with it".

The issue of doctors over diagnosing and over prescribing meds is real and actually fueled by the pharmaceutical companies.
BUT that is a separate issue and does not automatically mean every one needing anti-depressants is "faking it".

Some of you may not be old enough to remember when it was actually against the law to advertise prescription medications on TV and similar media.
I am and have noticed a BIG increase in the number of "ailments" people have since pharmaceutical company's began advertising meds on TV. They see some commercial for some new drug the pharmaceutical company wants to make $$$$ from and next thing you know they have all the symptoms they hear in the commercial and are running to the doctor for a scrip.
It sucks, it's inherently wrong, it's driven by nothing more than profits,
BUT it does not mean that bi-polar disorder and other forms of mental illness are bullshit.

Some folks really need to learn how to analyze a situation and make clear distinctions concerning what is going on.

I think there's validity to this. I have another daughter who is promodal schizophrenic, and whose psychiatrist said one day, "Life is a spiritual journey with challenges to overcome. We don't want to medicate away all her challenges." At the same time, without her meds she's a total basket case, so some medication is clearly needed to give her the boost she needs to even function.

Lynn, part of the accepted symptomology of bipolar disorder is delusions and even hallucinations - check it out on the Internet. I've known or indirectly heard about other people diagnosed as bipolar who also get delusional. One of the differences between that and schizophrenia is the extreme mood swings. And there can be bipolar symptoms without the delusions, also.

:D You won't find that one in the official diagnosis lists - maybe it will be someday though. ;)

Your experience is not universal. Bipolar for you is apparently less pronounced and extreme than it is for lots of others.

If you really truly think that, you need to live with a bipolar person. I've seen the difference between "being a dick just because" and a full-blown personality change. I do wonder if it's a term that's thrown about too loosely because I've known a lot of people who claimed to be bipolar who just got bummed every now and then, but I've also known two or three whose personalities just completely changed at random. I don't put up with the bad moods, I usually just leave him to himself until he comes back around, but it's scary as fuck. I'm not scared for myself, I never have been, but I'm terrified for him and everyone else because he goes on these irrational, completely ballistic rampages and starts threatening to do all sorts of fucking crazy shit. And then he stays in that insane frame of mind usually for the remainder of the day. It's real and it's scary as fuck.

I have mental illness. I got OCD, ADD, bipolar, and maybe when I was younger minor asperger's.

yeah exactly. people have control over their shit. I do not like when people believe that people with bi-polar have some excuse for what they do because of bi-polar.

i been to jail before and I do not blame it on bi-polar.

I am just like you. a couple of years ago i was way way worse. I used to break shit and yell and get into super rage mode over shit very fast. now I am super super chill and have not had any problems in a long time.

I still get insomnia sometimes but that is about it.

see that is my point. that dude just has issues. my view is those people are just freaking crazy.

I know few people who have bi-polar also. I have been in very crazy situations with some of these people before. I have been in some very intense and bizarre situations.

yeah I am actually. I was diagnosed with it and they even tried to put me on medication but I only took that depakote garbage for like 2weeks. they made take blood tests every month because the drug is so toxic they have to monitor it in my blood to make sure it does not destroy my liver.

I even changed my mind about this thread later on after I posted it haha.

    but whatever.

I think bi-polar exists but I think that people that use it as a excuse for their action is still bull crap. what I am thinking right now is kind of hard to explain with typing.

like I don't know. I think it exists but then I think it does not exist. I keep changing my mind.

probably because most of us who know what bipolar actually means think this is a thread of stupidity

    seriously how is that stupid??

The only one posting stupid shit here is you!! @Rugor..

You obviously dont know anything about mental illness. I worked in a hospital for close to 10yrs most this time Admittances processing and intake.. Without violating the privacy act and the contract I signed I can not speak of most of it. Again you dont have a clue what your talking about.

Secondly. Do you know how many gay people there are that suffered bipolar?

People with bipolar disorder include gays and lesbians, men and women, bisexual and asexual in nature. Anyone who has bipolar disorder will still value monogamy and trust with their significant other partner in a committed relationship. While it is very common knowledge that people suffering from bipolar disorder are more likely to indulge and engage in risky sexual behavior and activity, be bipolar disorder is often misrepresented when it comes to lesbians and gays.

One might argue that constant sexual compulsion is very usual for bisexual men and women that indulge in a lesbian lifestyle because of their bipolar disorder. They have more casual attitude towards relationships that include lesbians and gays, or bisexuality in nature. Many people with bipolar disorder will ask the therapist whether they are truly having mental health issues or if they are experiencing a manic or hypomania episode.

While it is true that most men and women suffer from bipolar disorder due to unusually engage in risky sexual behavior, this really depends upon if they are experiencing any manic depressive episodes or episodes of mania. Since there are so many symptoms of bipolar disorder, it is very hard to narrow down and pinpoint one exact cause for people choosing to engage in homosexual or bisexual activity. Many people in communities all over the United States feel that this figure is unjust and many people do have a prejudiced towards this way of life.

    Sexual Activity and Bipolar Disorder
research has shown that people with bipolar disorders have no problems making inappropriate sexual advances towards another person, taking dangerous risks when it comes to sexual decisions, or spending their finances and money on sex(prostitution). Many gays and lesbians will engage into a relationship very quickly and move in with a complete stranger. While the exact psychology behind the development of each individual bipolar disorder is currently unknown, it is certain that psychotherapy and mental health awareness does help to keep people with bipolar disorders on track in life.
Gays, Lesbians and Understanding Your Homosexual Identity – How it Relates to Bipolar Disorder
No matter if you are participating in homosexual activity or you have had your first lesbian sex experience, it is important you understand the reasons behind action may be choosing to partake in. Becoming a heterosexual, no matter what psychological disorder if any you experience, is considered part of everyday life here in America. Gays and lesbians want equal rights and do not want to be treated with any sort of discrimination or prejudice.
Your bipolar disorder does have the potential to call if you to make risky sexual decisions, no matter whether you are a gay man or lesbian woman. Bisexuality is simply the curiosity of experimenting with different sexual orientation and opposite sex partners. Some symptoms of bipolar disorder, such as mania, does point to reasons why someone would engage in bisexual activity or curiosity. As long as you do not engage in risky sexual activity with many partners, understand what it means to be sexually intelligent, understand any consequences that come with your actions, and make sure your behavior does not negatively affect any other party, you may consider yourself free of any true mental health problems with bipolar disorder.

While the depression and medication are parts of the bipolar disorder, this can affect your decision making process in bisexuality and homosexuality. Marriage is also another stressful situation for many bipolar patients, no matter what sexual orientation they are. Managing their own lives and having a husband or wife is often very difficult for any male or female to engage in. While bipolar people are very caring, even while dating, a committed relationship is often difficult for me because of the symptoms that come along with bipolar disorder. If you are capable of managing your life and actions, bisexuality may be something you can easily live with.
What to do if your Wife or Husband is Bipolar and Turns Out To Be A Gay or Lesbian???

Many people will often find out that their husband is gay or their wife is a list. Gay men, lesbian women and gay rights are very touchy subject for people that are bipolar and choose to have a bisexual lifestyle.
What is most important is that you truly understand what it means to be a bipolar patient or person and cope with this disease every day. Family and friends are great resource for people experiencing a mental illness to ask for help from. You will truly have people empathize with you. If your partner’s homosexual identity conflicts with your lifestyle, you have the difficult decision to make. There is no one answer for any couple or individual person when it comes to choosing what is right or wrong with people that suffer from bipolar disorder and want to engage in bisexual activity.
You are the only person that can choose what is right for you and your life.

It is very important you understand that this mental illness will cause what we will refer to is on normal sexual identity from time to time and different people that suffer from bipolar disease. Make your decision carefully and wisely for what you choose in your life. If your partner is having suicidal thoughts, is depressed, wants to commit suicide, or any other negative actions, it is very important you seek treatment or help from the community right away.

    Are we done here?? [IMG]

I'm not even sure how to reply to this. "Just freaking crazy" =/= mental illness? Bipolar is just a label for a variety of "just freaking crazy." And I'm not sure what you mean by "issues." It's almost like you're saying, "I don't like what this is called, so I'm going to throw a bunch of vague terms out there to describe it instead."

pyschotic. something triggered in the dudes brain that caused him to get crazy out of random. that is my guess. something very irrational to the point where you could consider schizophrenic.

and someone still has control over their brain. sure he can feel like shit or whatever inside suddenly and have some random change but if that happens and he does not feel like being around people then he just needs to get up and go be by himself till he feels better. there is no excuse for freaking out and causing some problems and then blaming it on bi-polar. he is not being controlled like a robot by a remote control. he can choose to do the right thing or the wrong thing. sure he can't control his brain and how he feels but he sure can control his mouth and actions.

but anyway regarding this thread. my personal view is that people suffering from bi-polar are suffering some other mental illness or disorder. you can disagree with me but whatever.

I think sure that bi-polar people can feel very impulsive and have a very very strong urge to do something but they still have self control. it is like putting cookies next to a guy watching tv who loves cookies and saying hey man you don't eat those cookies I will give you 10$ at the end of the day. but then the guy as he is sitting there is like oh my gosh those cookies will give me so much pleasure right now and are so good and he can't stop thinking about them with his manic fast thoughts and suddenly he just grabs them and starts munching on them and then afterword is like ahhh shit those cookies were good but I'd probaly rather have the 10$. but at the time the smell just made his mouth water so much he could not resist.

sorry for the thread title though and section that it is in. it should have been "people who use bi-polar as an excuse for their actions is bull crap" and it should have been in random thoughts.

oh and orison I view bi-sexual and homosexual as a mental illness. and I feel people who are that way have a corrupted mind. i feel bad for people like that and hope they get better and get past their perversion. I do not support it and am glad that the majority of american population is against it. in 1972 or something it got changed from being a official mental illness. I am not an asshole though and have a few lesbian friends and some guy I met at church camp I found out was gay later on and I still talked to him at church and was nice to him when I saw him.

just because you don't go around telling gay people what you think of them, doesn't mean you aren't an asshole.

and why is psychotic necessarily different from bipolar? psychotic episodes are one of many symptoms of the disease.

Most kids who will tell you how they have horrible ADHD and can't do their homework without amphetamines are full of shit.

Most teenagers who scratch at their wrists with plastic butter knives and tell you that they're just punching walls for attention because of how totally bi-polar they are are full of shit.

It's a self-fulfilling prophecy, when you tell people they have things that they have an easy time pretending they have, and that also give them great excuses for anything they please, AND for drugs besides, they end up even believing it themselves.

There's plenty of real bi-polars, just like there's plenty of people who really have ADHD. But if they try to use it as an excuse for behavior, it's fake as fuck, just like someone who drinks a beer, starts a fight or breaks something or whatever, and then goes "sorry, I'm drunk, that's why, don't worry about it it's nothing".

everybody suffers from depression, there is no such thing as a truly 'happy person'

those people who inflict themselves with illness like this - they just like to relish in their unhappiness. they should stop being so self obsessed.
