What do you all think of hipsters? Of course i'm talking about the people you see wearing skin tight jeans, doing "ironic" things.... you know the people i'm talking about. I don't know what to think of them. They seem to me like they are all about fashion and partying. Lots of them are artists, but usually it seems like their art is an extension of their ego, used to show off, used to bolster their self-image. They seem like they have inserted a lot of materialism and self-absorbed behavior into counter-culture, which used to to very anti-materialist and anti-egotism. But also I guess it could be a good thing. Lots of their philosophies and beliefs are respectable and lots of them are cool. And it's a popular movement, if it could get steered in the right direction it could be a great thing. What is this hipster movement all about? I'm kind of out of the loop on this one. Been living away from Western countries for too long. Are these the "hippies" of 21st century?
Well, I actually did a advertising plan to market to hipsters, their lifestyle is actually interesting, The new hipsters They are nihilistic (I don't give a f*ck attitude) Love to smoke cigarettes Trend setters Usually have tattoos that have a saying on it, they usually wear them on their chest They listen to Indie music And yes they love to go to parties/clubs hippies and hipster are two different terms and things , Very different from each other.
I think most hipsters are egotistical douchebags. Mainly rich kids slumming it. Their "anti materialism" is usually just another status symbol for them. Their use of irony is usually ignorant and lacks any true irony. It seems that their upper middle class sense of privilege permeates their very being as they scheme to find new ways to make others think they are weird and creative when all it is is contrived. I think it's just another group of scene kids. Loving indie music and having cool gadgets and tight jeans is 'in' now, they wanna be part of it. I don't care. As for the individual hipster, they're more than their group so it seems silly to me to give my opinion on an individual I don't actually know, and always give individual hipsters a chance when I see or meet them. They don't have to be what we project on them (same with hippies, satanists, vegetarians, soldiers, etc. etc. etc. ).
My close friends and I spend hours trying to understand hipsters, considering that a good majority of my peers are hipsters. We figured out that they generally are people who desperately want to fit into something larger than themselves. They are very insecure as independent people. They are so afraid of their own minds that they sell their soul to some phony group mentality. They pretend to have had all of these worldly experiences, but in truth, most of them have lived middle-class white suburban lifestyles and never encountered anything that really made them evaluate their lives before.
Egotistical people who only care about looks and themselfs? I thought they were the opposite of hippies..? Personally, I get pissed when my friends say im a hipster, Granted they don't understand the difference.
Yes. I noticed that most hipsters do come from privelage and are often pretty spoiled. Most of them seem to be financially set, not because of their own work, but because of hand outs from family. Trust funders basically. On a one on one level, some of them seem pretty cool. But in general, I think this whole sub-culture sucks. There's so much ego and materialism in it. Most hipsters seem like they think they are better than everyone else. They think they are on a higher level of coolness and cleverness than everyone else. But they aren't. It seems like a step in the wrong direction to me overall.
Ha! It's hard to tell the difference sometimes! Some people look like hippies, smell like hippies, and even talk like hippies, then you catch em talkin trash about some nice person for not being as hip/cool as they are... Then I think "why did I think you were a bigger hippie than me?" Don't be fooled by patchouli, they sell that shit in stores. I'm just having fun with this topic. My friends are not generally hipsters though some have some of the 'markings' (tattoos, stretched lobes and such) I dunno, I've never been hip in any kind of way. I sported a 'hippie' clothing style from the ages of 16-18, but other than that I haven't even cared for any fashion or style (though I LOVE the hippie style on others, it's always attracted me). Well hipsters can be all "cooler than thou" They can have it if it's what they want
haha this thread rules. it is true though. lots of middle aged rich kids trying to form these groups haha
Namaste! I also have noticed this Hipster trend and I don't think we should judge them all as one group, but as individuals instead. Let's not stereotype them all as people who only care about "looks and themselves." Because that may not be true! I know some "hipsters" with beautiful souls. Very creative, artistically inclined people that are modest and have been nothing but kind to me. Don't get me wrong I do also however know some hipsters who think they are above all, and that they are better than me because of their underground music preferences. I'm not going to dislike them for this mindset, I just hope one day they will be able to realize that everyone prefers different things, and that's a perfectly fine thing. Without that there would be no diversity in the world, how boring! So all in all, I wouldn't consider them the modern day hippies, but hey let's give them a chance!!! It's not very "hippie-like" of us to judge them without getting to know them as individuals, right? Health & Happiness to you all
So, how many Hipsters does it take to change a light bulb? ~Well, the answer is so obscure, I'm sure you've never heard of it Sorry, I had to, hehe...The folks I know who refer to themselves as 'Hipsters' just like to be different. They won't listen to music once it gets to the mainstream, they don't eat where anyone else does, catch my drift? All in all, I despise labels anyways, & I know lots of folks who call themselves Hipsters, when all in all, they are just unique creatures just like the rest of us....
Lol, thread title should be changed to... "Judgmental people talking about people they don't know" lol... what makes any of you better than anyone else Judgement should be left to the beholder... I love everyone until they give me a reason not to. Also these forums are called "Hipforums" - seems pretty ironic to me, especially after you just said hipsters do ironic things! Haha It's like someone who hates themselves and then go out of their way to make themselves look great... if you hated yourself wouldn't you be happy to look in the mirror and say that you were ugly? Ironyironyirony...
Looks like we found ourselves a hipster! The 'Hip' in the forum name stands for 'hippy' Also, don't you realize that you are judging the people in this forum by saying they are unjustly judging people? What makes you think you're better than everyone else here? PS - that last paragraph of yours made absolutely no sense.
Lol, oh you guys... :mickey: One day as Manjusri stood outside the gate, the Buddha called to him, "Manjusri, Manjusri, why do you not enter?" Manjusri replied, "I do not see myself as outside. Why enter?"
