so i've got juror duty coming up next week. got a summons a while ago and i almost totally forgot about it until i had a dream last night where i got into some legal trouble and had to go on trial. lol. it doesn't say what the case is for, but i hope it's not too serious. anyone know what the procedure is?
I don't know if it differs court to court or state to state, but when I was called for jury duty the first time, I had to call the night before to make sure they were still having court, then had to show up at like 8 AM at the courthouse. When I got there, everyone was kind of mingling outside the court room (make sure to pay attention to which room you'll be in, even our tiny courthouse has a few different ones), you can probably figure it out by the crowd of people there, then they'll call you into the courtroom and they'll call role, then they'll explain to you why you're there and what court case you could be trying. Then they ask if anyone knows the person on trial, and if you do, they'll ask you how you know them, then you have to go up and swear to the judge you're telling the truth and they'll dismiss you. There are plenty of opportunities to get out of it if you don't want to do it, too, all I had to do was tell them I wasn't comfortable deciding someone's fate and they dismissed me. Haha. I don't know what goes on after that...because I got dismissed early. But sometimes selection takes a couple of days because each side gets to pick and they're usually fairly picky. And it depends on what kind of a case it is and how public it is on whether or not you'll get to go home if you do get selected. For big cases (like the Anthony trial), they'll get you a hotel room and pay for your meals until the trial is over. That's about all I really know.
it depends on if you are picked as a juror, and if you are, the nature of the case. i was summoned, but when i called the day before (or the day of, whatever it says on the paper) they said they didnt need me. so i didnt get that far. track down your summons and read the instructions, and call if you have questions.
haha yea. i guess it just depends on if i get picked or not. i hope it doesn't take up my whole week though, since allgood is next week ><. says there is a compensation but it's not very much.
I signed a form to vote in college and i didn't even vote during the election... I did however get numerous phone calls from the government asking me about dates to attend juror duty. I cancelled on them twice because i explained that my fellow employees at UPS really needed help. Im not a hundred percent sure, but i think it was the same lady all three times who called. The third time i said i was moving which was true. During the move i cancelled everything i had in my name and changed my numbers. Its been seven years since then and not once has the government ever called for anything. I was very surprised that i was able to get off the first two times using a 'work' excuse. I had no problems doing it what so ever. I've heard other people say just the opposite but i don't remember what they did... It was awhile ago.
I only got $10 for the day I went. Not bad for sitting for half an hour, but that would've covered the WHOLE day and man, I make like $90 a shift at work, so I'd be super pissed to get jury duty now, lol.
I write on the form with big magic markers. I dont give a fuck!! I was charged with beating up 6 cops your buddies, 4 them hospitalized, case was dismissed after they murdered my bother... dont send me no more fucking letters for jury duty!! Letter returned to me asking what was the docket # in your case// Returned back from me:. What part of I dont give a fuck didn't you get, you got a computer and my info, look it up your fucking self!!! its been yrs now since Ive received any more..
Yeah..the last time they sent me my little summons, I circled "Mentally unstable/unable to make sound judgements" and sent it back. They didn't respond, and I didn't go. If I was in trouble for not going, I would've known (and gotten out of it) a long time ago because they send a letter to you telling you that you have so many days to come sort it out or they'll put a warrant out for you. It's nice that they give you warnings about that sort of thing these days, lol.
yea i so ended up telling them that i wouldn't be able to complete a whole week of jury duty (the amount they wanted). i ended up waiting around for like 4 hours for the judge to show up (how the hell are they not gunna have a judge there ready for us when they are taking up OUR free time) then they told us that the case plead out and sent us home. they told me that i wouldn't need to come back since i told them i wasn't going to do a whole week.
I wanna know how people 29 and older can have never been called to jury duty and I've already been called twice and I'm only 24. Not fair! Haha. I guess it's just the damn midget county I live in.
In my state, I think being called for jury duty has something to do with your driver's license b/c every single time I've gotten a new one, renewed, or even replaced a lost one, I've been called for jury duty. I've been called like 5 times. 1 or 2 times, the case was pled out and all of us possible jurors were "let go", and able to pick up our .20 per mile check at the end of the week. The other times, if the procecution didn't "strike me", the defense did! so WTH! Anyway, I've been called - but not chosen. lol
i hear jury duty suckkkkss.. i was summoned during the winter, but ended up getting out of it because i was in school and had lots to study for
I've heard the best way to get out of jury duty is to let the judge know that you are a firm believer in Jury Nullification.
