everyone's got a brain formula for the choosing of their domicile.

you take price, pit it up against quality of location, and decide if the square footage/facilities are up to your standards.

I don't fuck with drugs or crime, (stoner friends don't count) so I'm willing to spend a little bit more money to live in a medium level crime area. I could afford straight suburbia, if I wanted to sacrifice any spending cash.

Hypothetically, i could live in the cheapest part of town, but the wife won't hear of it, and I'm sure I could handle it, but hate it... the only reason I would ever live in the HOOD hood would be to save up lots of money real quick.. I could put all my crap in storage, me and my wife could live in a one bedroom for 300 a month until we saved up whatever we wanted. but like I said, Very BAD area.

I've got a good deal on where I'm living right now. Yeah, there's a few little whatevers that my wife complains about, like moldy bathroom or chewed up concrete. But every time we look at places in our price range, she is quickly reminded why we still live here... 3 br 1 ba garage, basement, attic, dining room, and eat in kitchen, front and back porches, fenced in half duplex, neighborhood convenience store 100ft away.

So what is your goal/dream/current situation/current gripes?

There is no such thing as a bad area where I live, unless you count loud music as a bad thing, in which case you won't want to be in a certain spot or two.

Other than that, it's pretty much a balance between what you want to spend and what amenities you want. Accommodation can get pretty basic around here if you're trying to save money, but it doesn't cost that much for a bit of luxury. And as anywhere, if you want to spend big money on a fancy place, you can.

I'm currently in what I would probably deem the best house I've lived in. In comparison with local standards, both price and amenities, it's a fantastic deal. Very cheap (10-15% of what I earn, depending on the month,) fantastic ocean view, separate bedroom, kitchen, hot shower, AC, spacious, internet/electric/water included. Virtually insect proof.

As always, there's a few little bits and pieces to complain about. But all in all, I'm tremendously happy. I was very lucky to get this place, and I'm getting a great price because the landlady is the owner of the business where I work.

My dream situation would be something similar to this place, but closer to the water, and without neighbors.

I want to leave this area. The only thing holding me back now is my mother...she is so dependent on me.

But I'm starting to sort of "settle" here....we're buying a house down the street. But I'd still love to leave New England someday

I've moved so many times in my life. I don't think I've been in a place longer than 2 years in the past decade +. Pretty dim.

I'm never moving again...No Storm is that menacing, no flood that high nor is there any force capable enough to uproot my new growth. My determination will no longer flicker against the slightest disturbance.

For good or bad. It's my call now.

An area with good schools was on top of the list. Then: low crime rate, a reasonable yard for kids to play in, stable neighborhood, privacy, storage, price, taxes, proximity to workplace -- not necessarily in that order.

The family unit should be the first and primary source of any kids education.

Well, I moved out here on a whim because I wanted a change. Now, I'm stuck here until the beau PCS's. As for the particular part of town I live in, I choose it because it's close to work, school, and nightlife.

Bought this place about 35+ years ago based on the view, the hills and woods and its distance from town(15 miles). The house was a very plain old single story farmhouse built with rough cut Oak timbered on the farm. The house is very solid but the old farmer that built it didn't have the best eye for tape measures or levels. That detail has made replacement windows and doors interesting work.

No complaints save for wishing I was farther out from town and on a higher hill but...
I've raised all my boys here and three of them live very close by having bought land touching mine. When I first moved here there were between 7 to 10 cars a day that went past. I knew who it was from the sound of the engine or time of day. Now there are more people going past but still not too many.

Most of my life history is here and I'll stay here as long as I live in the USA. It's been a good place for my family and me.
