This is a great movie done by the nut we all love, Mel Gibson. It is about a tribe of Indians living in the Jungle under the shadow of a collapsing Mayan Kingdom. The tribe is attacked and prisoners are taken. It is the story of one survivor and his quest for freedom. I love the body modification of the cast. It is at times funny, and at times tragic. You will like this movie.
I liked it as well - saw it in theater and got the DVD. It is historically inaccurate regarding the fall of they Mayan civilization but view it as total fiction and it is enjoyable. I loved the subtitle translating what the warrior said to the one who got bit by the poisonous snake: "You'r Fucked." Makes you realize that no matter what the actual Mayan words, that is what he said.
I watched this movie two or three times the very first time I rented it. I wouldn't mind having my own copy. The dress and body adornments with regard to social status in the tribes and Mayan civilized culture are fascinating. The story is interesting, exciting, and believable, and brings a strong element of realistic human interactions, especially humor, that is missing in lots of films depicting tribal cultures. I just love the alien look of the Mayan city. I would have loved to see these cities when they were occupied and vital. I can't do that now, but this film does a great job of providing a lifelike experience of it. Whatever you might think about Mel and his gnarly ways, he made a damn good movie.
i didnt know mel Gibson directed that loved the movie through even through it was a little to long for my taste
