When would a cop call in a drug dog? Say I'm in the car smoking a joint with some friends and I get pulled over. If I put the weed in my sock (which would most likely not be searched by a cop) and the cops smell weed can they automatically call in a k9 unit?

Where in the world have you been that the cops didn't search your sock?

Yeah if you get pulled out of a car and searched, your socks are included in the pat down.

Not all sniffer dogs are drugs dogs and i would guess depend on what type available at the time to the police. In uk there just take you back to police station for a body search or call in a blacked out police van to carry out a personal search if you give them grounds to do so.

There are not that many K9 units in a department, it's not always that easy to get one. There is likely only one or two on duty at any time. Your best bet is to stand your ground and make the cop get that K9, they will ALWAYS tell you they will, but they can't always back it up. In some states smell is probable cause to search you or your car, but in many it is not.

I know smell is not enough in my state, and I had an officer say he was going to search my car because he smelled weed. I simply told him he wasn't going to, he said he would get a dog, I said ok, and he came back 5 min later with a speeding ticket and no dog for me.

But they do not need probable cause to get a dog, they can detain you and get the dog in order to find the probable cause.

Know your rights because the police will not tell you, your rights make it hard for them to do their job, and they depend on the intimidation factor. They want you to be to so afriad of them you just talk. Next time you see a cop notice all the little things. IE the sunglasses, the way they walk with their hands on the hips so their elbows stick out.

This makes them look bigger, and it makes people uncomfortable to not be able to see eyes. (also the same reason a car salesmen wears shades, to get that suttle advantage on you)

Just remember these words "officer I do not consent to any searches" no matter what he says, only say that to him.

In my state (SC) they can smell a fart, claim it's weed and say they have probable cause to search you, your car, and everything in it.

They can (and will) call in a K9 unit if you refuse to let them search you or your vehicle - which you should always do - no matter what - do it politely - but always refuse. Now here's the kicker - the dog will be made to "indicate" or whatever the hell the term is, whether they detect a substance or not - bingo - probable cause to search your vehicle. My advice - don't smoke in your car - it's that simple - don't drink or smoke and you've just cut your chances of being hassled drastically. I've known so many people who thought they drove fine when they were baked - and they don't - neither do you. Just wait till you get where you're going - you'll reduce your risk of getting hassled, arrested, hurting someone or yourself. I'm not justifying the way things are, I'm describing what is - and if a cop wants to bust you, he/she will - whether you've done anything illegal or not. The best thing you can do for yourself is to make him/her feel safe and secure in the role he/she is playing, while making them fully aware that you are fully aware of your rights - politely. Sometimes they'll decide it just isn't worth the hassle of calling in a dog and send you on your way - but not likely - and if they do, you're going to be searched no matter what and if you have something (and sometimes even if you don't have something) they're going to find something and bust you. Don't make it easy for them - be polite - but don't do them any favors.
