So, I'm Doris. I've been thinking about getting dreads for a while now. I have naturally curly hair that I sometimes wear straight. Should I get my hair locked when it's curly or straight? Also, when my hair is straight it curls up when it gets wet (as shown in the pic). If I had my hair locked when it's straight, would the dreads curl up when they get wet?

I apologize if this is confusing..

Unless you really don't want to, I'd recommend just not brushing your hair and keeping it clean and separate how you want them. Your hair is made for dreading. Most straight haired folk (that want dreadlocks) are very jealous of hair like that :)

*Edit: check out this guy's thread, similarish hair type maybe.

    What he said.

Although I think it's a common misconception that curly hair locks faster.

It heavily depends on the type of hair, beyond strait or curly. I've seen some timelines where the curls obviously inhibited locking, or prevent certain sizes of locks, and some where they obviously helped. Same for strait hair.

What really matters is that it's dry and unconditioned.

I strongly recommend that you don't DO anything to your hair, and that if anyone offers to do anything to it, especially for money or with wax, you run very far away, very fast.

    Thanks for replying :)
I'm not very interested in the neglect method...what would be second best for my type of hair?

My hair is extremely curly, some people thought it was fake. I have curls that look like they were done on a pencil sized curling iron. I'm on my second set of neglected locks. My first set took about five years to start. You would see three inch long curls that I could stretch out down below my chin. Once they started, they just took off for me. The second time around, I did the same thing and locks started in about 6 months. That was about ten years ago. If you don't want the neglect method, try plats. I have a few frizzy parts of my head where the locks don't want to form. I just had my wife braid those couple of areas and the new growth is locked.

Just shampoo when it needs it.
    Don't brush or finger comb.
I'm just 3 months in. I have some dreading on the top and starting in the back.
    Long process.
But when you're finally all locked up it'll be worth it knowing you waited and didn't force the locks.
    A testimony of your patience.

Also, when someone asks how you "made" dreadlocks, it would just feel silly explaining some rippling/twisting/combing/waxing/rubbing method..... It's awesome to see their faces when you explain that you didn't do anything at all.
