what you have in most "democratic" countries has nothing to do with real democracy. Its like in the ancient communist eastern germany where you could only vote between two parties lol
Democracy is a rather good method of taking care of political situations. On a whole, I do not feel like democracy was meant to be exploited to the point it has. The 3/4 of the general caucus today is not linked to the working class or the common people and their life style. We need more representation rather than a few smug politicians. A almost imagine the House of Reps and Senate as elementary bullies with degrees and nice suits. The rest of us doing well for ourselves our own way get teased with taxes instead.
It's not democracy that "erodes" your freedom, but the corruption in the democratic system. Oh, and living in any form of state and under any kind of government will automatically reduce your individual freedom.
Democracy, 1) Can not exist if the average person is an idiot. An intelligent and educated public is necessary. Because stupid people vote with emotion and not logic. Therefore they are easily manipulated 2) Can not exist if there is a free and open market. Because in a free open market there will eventually be forces that can obtain enough power to corrupt a democracy 3) Can not exist if there is a large entertainment industry. Because eventually democracy will become co-opted and therefore it too will be mere entertainment. 4) Can not exist if "not voting" remains legal. It must be illegal to "not vote" and penalties for not voting must be severe. 5) Can not exist if voter assemblies remain legal. Voter assemblies must be illegal. No more leagues where people assemble and form groups that decide to support a particular candidate. Voting must be a private affair for every individual.
That pretty well sums up why Democracies eventually fail. Unanimity is unachievable under any form of government which is why the U.S. Constitution set out to create a Federal government with limited powers over the individually sovereign States. If this was in the "Should guns be outlawed in the U.S.A.?" thread, I would say that "Freedom can only be maintained if the sheep is well armed." But what the Hell, I just just said it. Democracy is simply majority rule. That does not always mean a majority of the ruled, but can often be the result of a majority of those who rule. That is the primary reason the Constitution needs to be adhered to literally by government, not allowing changes to occur through reinterpretation, but by the amendment process which should clearly state the changes in words understandable by all, and be accepted by 3/4 of the States, not 1/2 + 1. Changes which take place through acceptance by a simple majority are most often poor changes which lead to consequences thereafter. Freedom is worth fighting for, but I'd think twice before I'd risk my life for Democracy. You never know for certain if you'll be part of the majority or the minority in a Democracy.
Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.
Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people. Just thought I'd get in on the quote game
