Yes, certainly, but that still is a matter of the functioning of the whole memory storage and retrieval, not really how much can be stored. Now maybe in the instance of severe brain trauma the potential capacity can be reduced because the cells are physically damaged and can't store new memories. But that is different than saying that we have limited storage capabilities.

I don't know, in my thinking there is a distinct difference between the potential storage capacity and how well that is utilized or how efficient the saving and retrieving of memory is.

But just like everyone else in this thread, I'm going by what I do know and extrapolating from there. Nobody actually really knows how the whole memory thing functions, at least not yet.
My main contention throughout this whole fiasco has been making the distinction between how MUCH and just HOW. They are two different things, IMHO.:)

This whole thing started from the statement that we have a limitation to the number or amount of memories that can be stored, everything else has been about HOW we save and retrieve, not how MUCH is possible.

I don't get it that people can't understand the difference.

Ya, I totally get whatcha mean. For what it matters, I totally agree. TM's post got me thinking tho about when we say we don't know the limit of, or perhaps it's nearly unlimited, the amount of memory we can store that that applies to the "normal" and healthy brain capacity. As TM says, he feels his capacity is limited and that just got me thinking about an aged brain, and as you mentioned injury. Or disfunction.
    I dunno, idle ramblings...

In my case, I feel my ability to store is probably still pretty normal, but I do know that my ability to retrieve is impaired.

There has been plenty of studies done on short term memory and usually the average amount of 'items' one can store in short term memory is about 7, coincidentally the same number of digits as telephone numbers  I'd be interested in seeing if that number rises or drops to the average person in the depths of a psychedelic journey.

Short-term memory (or "primary" or "active memory") is the capacity for holding a small amount of information in mind in an active, readily available state for a short period of time. The duration of short-term memory (when rehearsal or active maintenance is prevented) is believed to be in the order of seconds. A commonly-cited capacity is 7 ± 2 elements.
