I just thought of this. Its a circumstantial situation with a question at the end. I'll use a random example.

Lets say a person has a grandma, his parental guardian which he still lives with at the age of 18. This 18 year old smokes cigarettes and drinks beer. As does the grandma. The cigarettes and beer are harmful to the grandma as she has suffered a bout of health issues resulting from the abuse.

If the 18 year old person is penny less and wishes to have a smoke and a beer, so he steals one of each from the grandma in question.

Are the ethics of this theft different from any other theft of property from a 'karma/sin' perspective? Would said hypothetical god judge sin on the boy who stole? Or would the fact that he's taking something harmful away from the grandma even the judgment out?

Its obvious that he should quit based on the example his grandma is setting, and that the cigarettes/beer are going to cause HIM health issues as well...but that's not the question here.

Pardon if it seems like a silly thing to think about, just curious.

    Thanks!

Haha. Well I'm sure someone somewhere has done something similar to that. I just wanted to create a situation that might exempt the sin of theft. Idk I was bored LOLZ!!11

Well I think stealing in most circumstances is fine, if you want to do it, then do it. You know the consequences and if you are brave enough to face them, then do so.

Well it isn't really benefiting the grandma at all. She will just have to go out and buy more cigarettes and more alcohol, it's not helping her quit, just wasting more of her money.

That being said, i have "stolen" a cigarette from my mom once. Although i don't smoke at all and am completely anti-tobacco, i only stole it because i wanted to try emptying it out and filling it with weed (works pretty good too once you remove the filter :D) this was done during a time i had no papers and really wanted a joint.

someone used one of my credit cards online yesterday for multiple transactions but they didn't give the correct security code. the credit card company called me today to ask about the transactions and the fraud department is investigating. they said i'll be told who the person is and that they WILL be prosecuted! i haven't used that card in 3 months.

i don't understand why people try to get away with things like this.

the way i understand it, these days it's as easy to trace the hacker as it is for the hacker to hack!

stealing baby food from the grocery store? probably okay.

stealing from your sick grandmother? not so much.

    try harder.

it might be closer to ok if he stole medication for his sick grandma from a junkie who got it by scamming the emergency room.

make sure its the actual company calling ...some of the scammers pretend to be the credit people lol

they actually sent me an email at 4:30 AM which i didn't read until after they called. they told ME info and didn't ask for any (good sign) and i was also able to see the fraudulent transactions by accessing my account online while i was on the phone with them.

but you're right - some scammers DO pretend to be calling from the card company and my first thought when i answered the phone (it was an 800-number with no name) was that the call was a scam!

thanks for looking out for me! :2thumbsup:

*i just did a reverse lookup for the phone number on my caller ID and it IS a valid number for that company

Theft is theft. Karma is Karma.

Since he wants the smoke and beer it is not sounding like he is doing this for Grandma's better interests. It sounds like he is trying to justify his wanting something he can't afford and then trying to avoid the karma/sin by saying he is trying to protect Grandma from herself. Grandma is an adult. If she chooses to smoke and drink that is her decision. Maybe her plan is to die young and get away from this kid who is mooching off her. Do we know? Maybe she can't afford to buy smokes and beer for someone else. It sounds like the kid is a thief who does not want to take ownership of his actions. Just sayin.

I guess the better question here is what you think.
