Okay, next month I was going to finally go ahead & get dreads, but my question is will I have to keep getting them twisted until they eventually lock on their own or would I have to have them locked by a stylist?

If they can lock on their own, how long would it take?

Wouldn't twisting your hair just give you twists (is that a thing?)?

Definitely read the FAQ, dreadlocks will eventually lock up by themselves, it might take years.

    No.

They will lock on their own. Will take 6-12 months.

    Read the FAQ.

Srsly guys, we need to sticky the FAQ thread itself.

im assuming your hair is of the african texture. if so, twisting them on maybe a bimonthly basis for about 6mos to a year will help keep them separated and uniform. you don't want to go overboard on twisting because you will mess up your progress. and you don't need a stylist to retwist them. just wash, twist, dry.

also twisting too tight can damage the roots which will really slow down the locking progress, honestly tho if you just let them be they will lock all on their own over time, all you really need is patience :)

Well, my hair is mostly of African texture, but I am mixed with European & Indian, so that shows in my hair as well. And I'd honestly trust a stylist to twist my hair more than myself. I'd also only go to get them re-twisted once a month or so, instead of several times a month & what not.

And I only really was wondering because I know getting them locked on the spot costs about $250-$350 bucks, which I don't have right now, & which is also why I'm getting the twists next month & not the actual locks.

why would you trust a stylist that's going to charge you upwards of $250 to twist your hair? im pretty sure you could just relax on the couch and just twist your hair...right? you do know that you cannot get "locks on the spot" v. "twists"; they're the same thing. the method of twisting to get locks takes just as long as the back combing/twist and rip method to see results...as in 6+ months to see any locking.

i would highly recommend you click the thread "read this before posting", it contains an FAQ.

Number one, it won't cost even close to $250 to twist my hair, it will cause $55-60 to merely get twists. If I wanted actual locks in my hair, it would be $250, which is understandable considering it's a time consuming process, one that I wouldn't trust myself to accomplish because I know very well I couldn't.

Either way it goes, I would say my question has been answered so thanks to all for taking the time to post with an informative answer. :)

ok, so i guess you don't seem to understand this concept.

first of all, you should never have to pay anyone to twist your hair for you. you are getting scammed. and besides there is no difference between "twists" and "actual locks". twists do not start locking for months, and months. you cannot go into a salon and walk out with locks. are you understanding? you will come out with twists, or brotherlocks/interlocks, wax, or a combination of those.

you can do this yourself for free. section them with rubberbands. get a friend to check your sections. twist, maybe some coconut oil, clip, dry/high heat. do that once or twice a month. they will start to locks after a few months.
