    Hi everyone ,

Im putting this thread up as maybe an Information Link to/for anyone who can give or would like information about any type of Alternative Life Styles and community living here in the U.K

Most information it seems about such places in the U.K. seems to be only through word of mouth {friends etc} or personal experiance with pot luck {wich is time consuming}.

    Me/ Musician {jam sessions }{Busking sometimes}.
    Artist.{Bohemian Nature.}
Looking to up root from a rented house up North after many years, and making a new start .

So that some of you folks can identify what im looking for and others, maybe you are also in the same situation and maybe looking for the same information OR maybe some already with the Info can give the rest of us on this site some .

Im putting a link in , have heard this town could be of interest to me ,or maybe others ???

Iff anyone has further comments then please share them with all who come onto this thread .

    Thanks :sunny:

also in your edit.....better grammER, you kill me!!

but back on topic, totnes is a very cool place but i've never heard much about any alternative communities, sure it's full of hippys but they all live in houses.....there isn't some place with a load of wig wams set up round the back of the market square.

There can be a good reason for that. Living in a small community you don't just let totally unknown people just move in as it tends to cause too many problems. It tends to work by personal recommendations and random meetings of like minded souls.

My way of thinking on it is that if you're suited to alternative community living then an alternative community will find you, not the other way around.

Time consuming? I don't think so. If you're wanting to live an alternative lifestyle in a community then start working on the alternative lifestyle you want to live while you wait for a suitable community to appear.

You mention Totnes, so i'm presuming you're looking at Devon. My suggestion would be that if you are looking to live in a rural community in somewhere like Devon to actually move to at least a small town in Devon, if not a village, and get used to the lifestyle down here first. It's very laid back and relaxed and can be quite a spin out if you move from a city like i did.

The best places in Devon are anywhere near a beach, and there's plenty to chose from. :)

Then just start getting to know people down here who are into alternative living at festivals and meetings and see where it leads.

Hi 2 barefeet ,im looking at anywere that has a bit of a placid culture and were folks prefer to walk amongst the flowers instead of all over them {sorry for the cliche } also communities that are more into music /the Arts /being creative within there own selves and well being ,than people i am surrounded by in a culture of my geographic were abouts now .
    Dare i say Merseyside .
I used to have a job that took me all over the u.k {H.G.V. Driver } but although ive seen everywere ,it didnt give me an insite into the heart of communities , but do know that Down South is different from were i am now .
Up here i had friends who lived a culture of music like myself , were pretty chilled out and we done our own thing ,avoiding all the negative vibes and soul less everyday crap that went on .
Those friends of mine are now doing other things , some still on the music jam scene ,but as i look around ,sorry ,this place im at doesnt hold anything for me anymore ,not that it did to much in the first place .

Now im at a cross roads and need to take another direction of were i want to be .{Though still with the music and chilled out people .

    Thanks for reading :2thumbsup:

I used to live up in Lancaster and before that North East, so know what the North is like, then i lived in the East End of London for over 12 years before i moved to Devon 3.5 years ago. No regrets whatsoever - weather's much better down south which i think makes people happier anyway. Rural living is incredibly different to city living, but there's still plenty of music nights, jams, open mic sessions, festivals etc., to be had, so you won't have to sacrifice your enjoyment of music.

don't thank me, thank lithium, i think his contribution was far better.

move to london, there are no flowers there....less danger of walking on them.

    QFG!

like growing up and letting the drudgery of reality set in?

you're welcome. my life is tremendously dull.

I am glad that Totnes still has some of its alternative chops. I first went there as a kid in the 60's and thought - wow, these people are a bit different - nice vibe. Tho of course probably not those words...as a 12 year old. We actually considered moving there recently and were shocked by how expensive it was. There are a lot of good people living there and thereabouts and real motivators too. Its a real shame that Dartington is closing because that helped to bring in the artisitic talent to the area.
Of course what usually happens is that market forces will not let a place be. As soon as anywhere is identified as being a bit funky and quirky the prices go up and people who made it that way in the first place cannot afford to live there and it just becomes full of rich wankers who think they live somewhere cool. Like Notting Hill and parts of west London. Look at what happened to North Beach in San Francisco, or any of the southern beach towns in CA.
So back to UK, Glastonbury is still markedly "hippy" but a high street full of crystal shops does not make it great. And there is a big divide between the local chavs and the hippys, so dont know if its a great example. I really dont know where else? Would love to hear though. Most towns are boring full of the usual chain shops and dunces doing the same things. If anywhere though, Devon and Cornwall stand the most chance and have great scenery to explore as well.
