Anyone else actively play jazz in a band?

I just wanted to see if anyone else plays jazz. I have played, or more correctly put, practiced, by myself for years, as jazz is my second favorite genre of music. However, only in the last couple of months have I been in an active band.

I play electric bass in a band that features trumpet, sometimes guitar, and a drummer. We play mostly in the style of the post bop of the mid 1960s. It is great. I have looked forward to playing in a real band for years. I was lucky to be recognized by one of the other, more established jazz bands in the area (there are only like 4 of us bands haha), who got me talking to the drummer. Then we formed. We don't have a name yet and haven't done any gigs yet, as we are working hard on a good set list of our take on some Jazz Standards.

Does anyone else have the joy of playing live jazz? Even if it is just you practicing?

Difficult, but rewarding once you are familiar with it. Right!?

What instrument are you familiar with?

I would like to, but nobody I know is interested in jazz or anything that uses over four chords. I won a scholarship to a jazz camp last summer playing bass, it was pretty neat even though I never got in depth into jazz theory. They put you in theory classes based on a theory test given to you when you audition. I had no idea a triangle meant major.. and I eventually got bored of writing down the notes to every fucking scale I know, so I turned it in half filled in. So I was put in the lowest theory class and learned ... nothing. But there were performances every night so it was fun.

my high school actually has a pretty serious jazz band. they get paid gigs all around buffalo. the gigs are usually for parties and stuff like that but they just played for a buffalo sabres party and that was pretty sweet. I play tenor sax in it and jazz and inprov has changed the way i look at music.

Sometimes the band I jam with covers some jazz tunes (take five, autumn leaves, and other standards)... but I can't really call myself a jazz musician. I can throw down some jazzy bass lines though.

Cool. Any jazz is better than no jazz haha.

As a jazz bassist, I can tell you that if you can lay down a jazzy baseline, you can lay down any bassline. You should try to play more jazz. There are more jazz players than you would imagine. Even in Pennsyvlania (which is where my group, The Lancaster Jazz Project, is based).
