what is the bigger nightmare as a vegan? for me it is to become old and can t cook again and somebody cooks meat for you! i could never go for an old people home and eat like everybody! maybe also to be on a little boat in the middle of the sea and have to eat raw fish like certain survivors did!if it is for survival will you eat flesh again? me probably but it will be difficult!

Well you don't ever want to go to jail then. The food there is hideous to begin with, but for a vegan it would be complete hell...

How old are you that you're worried about not being able to feed yourself when you're old?

i am 48 but i have been hospitalized and it was difficult in an extreme case like this! do you think there is an age to worry about your old age? probably.. i suppose when you are 20 you do not think like this! when you get older and see people around you in institutions or loosing theit independence you may start to think about it!yes i think it is a question for my age group time is flying isn it?or maybe this is in my nature to worry? the problem is that when you do not eat like everybody you look a little strange and you draw attention when you shoulh not like it!i wish i were living in india where being a vegan is partly belonging to the culture! sunnyhappyvegan you are not a friend of mac donald i can see!but there must be somewhere somebody making vegan pizzas!yes with tofu and a crust made out of crush almonds and oats let us look for the recipe of vegan pizza!it reminds me the movie:supersizeme the guy was eating in fast foods one month straight everyday but his girlfriend was a vegan chief and at the end she begged him to stop when his life became threatened!really a nightmare for true for that poor girlfriend!!

By the way, I don't think there are many vegans in India. Milk and yogurt are a big part of the vegetarian diet there.

yes this is true about india but at least they do not have a cult for red meat ..even a vegan must feel more comfortable in a country like this.. it is very much linked with the tradition of one country.. the concepts of compassion and reincarnation are more present in the indian culture.. do you know these people named jains who do not eat onions because they do not want to disturb the underground animals?this is an extreme case we don t see in the western world!for a vegan at least for me the worst thing is to see flesh in one plate.. i will see cheese with better eyes but not to eat it!

yeah which is why it will probably never happen for me... but i am a vegetarian for a mixture of reasons. first because i never ever liked the taste of meat so it was convenient and then there comes the ethics and nutritional value.. i don't drink milk or eat most dairy because it has always grossed me out... basically i'm a picky, annoying eater. i just LOVE cheese.

cheese is something i wanted to cut back on and try to illiminate because of the fattening it does to me. i'm a dancer professionally and most of my fat calories come from cheese.. its bad but i love it lol. hence the reason why i'd love to get it out of my diet... and as a health NUT going vegan is always on my mind... it's going to be a reach though.

for me neither not to eat meat was difficult i never liked it as a child!
it is true i used to like certain cheeses but my desire to eat in a purer way and not to sacrifice any animal life or well being was stronger.

as far as i remenber my ideology made me go through the changes and the will to have a cleaner body that can be obtained by a diet out of plant regarding to my beliefs.

i don t even remenber the taste of cheese it is 25 years i am a vegan i remenber only the bad smell!
did you find some kind of cheese they make with soja products? it may exist!
can you replace the cheese by something vegan you like the same?

i think that when we are becoming older our taste for material things is getting less exigent and we can better give up certain things..
maybe it has to go with a certain spirituel awareness.. look at these buddhist monks that beg their food from people in thailand they eat just to maintain their strenght they do not business with what they eat..

maybe we can get inspiration from that!

you know what is difficult fot me? it is to see people eating ice cream at the beach and know that for me to have a ice cream i have to find a health food store to get a soja ice cream.
but nowadays it bothers me less and less maybe i eat so much of that as a child that i do not bother about it so much again.. maybe one day your time will come that you eat enough cheese in your life!

I've never thought of that (probably cuz im not a vegetarian/vegan), but i imagine there are homes for old pple where they take your usual diet into serious consideration. I mean, if they take care of pple's allergies, or pple's diabetes etc, surely they can make sure vegan pple dont end up being fed meat.. hopefully

    because cheese is yummy

Any institution that feeds you will present problems for a vegan. It's only recently that restaurants have begun to acknowledge the vegans in our midst with an entree or two for them. So don't expect institutions to be on the cutting edge.

I'd say your best bet is some kind of veggie commune where you can retire and live among fellow vegans, some of who will cook for you.

the commune is a good idea but the ideal commune is hard to find!maybe they will take better care of me if i put them on the legacy!!or old vegans have to par up and organize themselves together! thorabeard there is a story in my family that during the war they killed the auntie s cat and they eat it!

Three assisted living facilities I investigated for a family member offered "strict vegetarian" dining.
Each had a slightly different definition of "strict veg," but the mind-set IS out there.

    Dairy veg was more common.
