Is anyone else a little disheartened about the "popular" music today? i find myself listening to older music wonder where all the good lyricists and musicians are. Where are the jim morrisons janis joplins and jimi hendrix's of our generation? share your favorite musician, band or type of music that maybe not alot of people know about. what bands or musicians do you idolize today?

Well, you can't really "idolize" artists today like you used to, but to say that pop today is all downhill is not right.....you just gotta have the GUTS to turn off MTV and American Idol and all that crap and get back to searching for REAL music like on last.fm and Myspace...I would throw facebook down the flush too :):):)

I just ignore today's "popular music" if I don't like it. Makes it easier to focus on the good stuff, there's actually a lot of good music today to be found when you're not looking for the new Morrison or Hendrix.

There's a lot of great music out there, most of it being released now. You just have to look for it, and I also find that people of our generation idolize people who suck just because they were the bees knees of their time. Who cares?

I tend to favor respect older music from pre-80's best for the shear innovation and 'true' musicianship (the lack of technology really was a virtue), but lately I have found myself listening more and more to contemporary hip-hop and dance because the beat is still enjoyable, even though it may not be the most original. But really I am a big fan of all kinds of music, my Pandora is packed with pretty much all genres available. There really are some decent newer bands though if you can get past what's mainstream. The Black Keys, for example, are the antithesis of your typical modern day pop. They resemble more Clapton-like style.

Damn, what sort of bleak, sadistic, lugubrious, stagnant abyss did you crawl out of? :frown:

Music is still good - it's just the music the mainstream chooses to showcase isn't. If you search out lesser known bands/musicians/etc., you'll find music you like. But you have to turn off the radio first, and open your mind.

Birds don't need our music. Have you listened to a bird's tune recently? Infinitely more beautiful than anything we can compose.

So you do favor music, good to know. It would be naive to think that music is just another man-made invention before listening to the rhythms of nature. Humans only manipulated it.

Is that music? All sound is music then. That's fine with me. I just think if I could choose to listen to Beethoven's 9th or a bubbling brook for the rest of my life, I wouldn't pick the maestro.

No, not all sound is necessarily music, just sounds that may inadvertently coerce it's own beat or rhythm. However various sounds from various places may even conduct it's own symphony, but it depends on how you listen.

To be fair, I don't know if anyone can truly be obligated to just one piece of music without eventual exhaustion. Even the serene sounds of the twittering of birds or the flouncing of ocean waves may cause madness. It's almost better to go deaf.

Nowadays we have lots of diversity. I think ever since there was some diversity in music there has been music that sucks :p

I guess that for every generation born there is different appreciation of taste - even though it is foreign to what was - what is now is only a pre-cursor for what will be.
Evolution of Music is only one aspect of our development - though I do believe with less muse and consideration.
I feel that the celebrity of fame and commercialisation of *POP* as a product (See 'X' Factor, USA, UK etc has talent) See more "Singers" and less Bands. Songwriters have become staff as opposed to members of Groups -(granted with some notable exceptions)
I grew up with Brian Wilson, Carole King, Morrison, Lennon /McCartney Jagger/Richards etc so bemoan their passing (so to speak) - Though Im sure that the kids of today - given their chance, will produce also.
I'm just happy to have been there then and enjoyed then still :)
    Still, in words of olde
