I'm thinking of grabbing some scissors (feels like a really weird concept at this point) and trimming some of the weirder/messier parts of my dreads. Like if there's a mostly blunted end, with a very small piece sticking of in a random direction. Or if there's a long piece made up of maybe 4 strands of hair that branches off from a real dread about 1/4 of the way from the root and is loose all the way down. Anyone tried this? Should I do it, or will it just look weird or shitty after?
Why would you do that? Still obsessed with "perfect dreadz"? If you cut, you may see a lot of destruction and fall-out. I think Hellodreadhead trimmed hers once or twice.
I'm mostly just talking about loose strands that stick out the end of otherwise blunted dreads - if i did this i would cut it just enough that it was even with the rest of the blunted part rather than sticking out at a crazy angle. not really, but my dreads still don't really look very dread-y, and i think that might help a bit. i actually had someone pretty recently who i had just met a few weeks before ask me if i was gonna dread my hair soon. pissed me right off, after over 2 years of waiting, that someone could still look at my hair and not think it was dreaded (i personally think it does look dreaded, but not like most other dreads i see)
lolz, you got all shitty and defensive when people started asking why your hair didn't look very locked for 2yrs+, now you've changed your mind or what? If you trim the hairs, chances are it'll look dumb. My advice, don't do it.
Years ago I did cut bits of naff loose hair, but now I just get them involved in the dreads, otherwise you're never gonna enter the golden age of all dreadlocked hair
I trimmed mine several times. Make sure you cut them at an angle so you don't have ugly looking blunted tips
When I cut mine I just brushed out the tips afterwards to give them wispy ends, rather than blunted ones, I don't know what'll happen if you do it to dreads that aren't totally mature though. Tbh I only half read the thread, I think if you start trimming hairs half way down it'll look really noticeable, might be wrong though.
Meh. I've done it- I had some really weird parts on the end of my front dreads (where I had bleached my hair years ago and the hair was too weak to dread up) - parts of them straight fell out instead of dreading- and I trimmed off what was left. NBD. I wouldn't advise trimming the 'weirder messier "parts of the middle of your dreads though- the weirder messier parts are usually just were it is messing up in order to become stronger/tanglier- if you just cut that off it will weaken it.
I ended up going for it. I basically just went through and neatened up the tips on them. most of the stuff I cut was loose hair that was definitely not going to get absorbed since it's been the same now for most of two years. a lot of weird crab claw kind of stuff where one side would be normal and the other side would be like 2 strands of hair knotted together. i'm pretty happy with the results, it definitely looks better than before and only on one or two dreads does the end look slightly unnatural. if i have time i'll post pics tomorrow.
